Ken Russell Memorial Classic 2012 Field – Hollindale Stakes Day

The final field and barrier draw for the 2012 Ken Russell Memorial Classic, one of the six black type features running at the Gold Coast for Saturday’s Hollindale Stakes Day meeting, is now out with a crack field of sprinters engaged for the juvenile’s feature.

Running as the Gold Coast Race 4 at 1:25pm the $100,000 Listed Moreton Hire Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) has drawn a total of 18 acceptors made up of 16 starters and two emergencies.

The race was won 12 months ago by Gerald Ryan’s ace Sydney raider Hot Snitzel who went on to enjoy a stella Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with a third in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m), big three length win in the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and good second behind Benfica in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m).

This year Ryan is out for back-to-back Ken Russell Memorial wins with the lightly-raced Dances On Stars.

The Snitzel colt broke their maiden status last start with an impressive first-up win in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on April 14 and Ryan is hopeful they can overcome their wide barrier 13 draw on Saturday and follow in the footsteps of their more famous stablemate.

There are two other last-start winners along with Dances On Stars engaged in the Keith Russell this year with the Bruce Hill-trained Burleigh Heads (barrier six) and Helen Page’s Courtz Boy (barrier 11).

Local Choisir gelding Burleigh Heads was last seen putting a quarter length on Utilism in a 1200m handicap at Doomben on April 14 and officially race at their home track in the Ken Russell.

Courtz Boy is another Gold Coast hope the son of Court Command coming off a win at the track and distance on a Heavy (9) course on April 21.

Other big name entries in the mix include Rex Lipp’s Toowoomba galloper Charge A Fortune, the John Thompson-trained Casino Prince filly Utilism, and the Kelso Wood-trained Sizzling.

Sizzling was one of the key two-year-olds of the spring – summer season following a beautiful six length win at Eagle Farm on debut in November.

They went on to run second firstly to Noogoora Burr in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m) then to Driefontein in the Gorup 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m), and were last seen running a good fourth to Driefontein again in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in January.

Phelan Ready Stakes winner Noogoora Burr is also running in Saturday’s race but they have failed to finish better than fifth since their stakes success back in December.
