Adelaide Guineas 2012 Field & Barriers Released

A field of 10 has been accepted to contest the other three-year-olds’ feature on the Morphettville race card this Saturday, the 2012 Adelaide Guineas.

While the top stayers in this age group will be running in the day’s marquee event, the 2012 South Australian Derby, the $80,000 Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m) is also shaping up as a great betting race for the punters.

Due to jump as Morphettville Race 5 at 2:20pm (SA time) the 2012 Adelaide Guineas is shaping up as an exciting showdown by a number of in-form hopefuls including the Danny O’Brien-trained Rock Of Gibraltar gelding The New Boy.

Due to jump from barrier six with Damien Oliver in the saddle wearing the No. 1 saddlecloth the Victorian visitor has been in good form back home this season most recently finishing a length away third to Red Typhoon over 1700m at Caulfield on April 7 carrying 59.5kg, The New Boy to appreciate the drop back to 57.5kg on Saturday.

There are two last start winners engaged in the Adelaide Guineas this year with the Terry & Karina O’Sullivan-trained Balzeus in gate two and Patrick Payne’s Hot Lover in gate seven.

God’s Own gelding Balzeus improved on their disappointing ninth first-up at Sandown with a good win over Riziz in the Listed HC Nitschke Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks on April 21.

Nitschke Stakes winning jockey Dom Tourneur retains the ride on Saturday.

Riziz who ran second in the Nitschke Stakes also features in the Adelaide Guineas field and will be out to turn the tables on their last-start conquer, the Ken Sweeny-trained Zariz gelding seeing the mile for the first time from barrier nine.

Hot Lover meanwhile will jump from barrier seven, the lightly-raced Bel Esprit colt having won three of their five starts to date.

Most recently Hot Lover put a minimum two and a half lengths on their rivals to win a 1300m handicap at Echucha on April 15 carrying a hefty 60kg.

Other notable hopefuls including the Sam Kavanagh-trained Port Adelaide Guineas runner-up Meshmaker in the far outside gate, and Phillip Stokes’ Exceed And Excel filly Just Discreet in gate three with Jason Holder riding.
