2012 Silk Stocking Final Field Announced

This Saturday Gold Coast Racecourse will come to life for Hollindale Stakes Day, one of the key support races on the bumper nine event card being the Silk Stocking 2012 for fillies and mares.

Running as Race 5 at 2:00pm the $150,000 Listed Silk Stocking (1200m) has this year drawn a final field of 12 acceptors.

The top rated and weighted hopeful set to carry 58kg is the Terry Commerford-trained Montana Flyer.

Drawn in barrier nine with Larry Cassidy booked for the ride the Flying Spur six-year-old has their first start for Commerford having formerly been prepared in Sydney by Gai Waterhouse.

Out to improve on her recent poor form Montana Flyer, last seen crossing sixth behind Miss Keepsake in in a 1300m handicap at Kembla Grange in March, was competitive the last time she raced in Queensland when a good fourth behind Yosei in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) last June.

Fillies and mares coming off some eye-catching recent runs include the Robert Heathcote-trained Funtantes and the Barry Baldwin-trained Saraji.

Easy Rocking five-year-old Funtantes has run second in her last two stakes assignments over this distance beaten just a short half-head each time, most recently by Risk Aversian in the Listed Junamo Stakes at Eagle Farm on April 14.

Junamo Stakes fourth placegetter Dual Chamber is also backing up in the Silk Stocking on Saturday the consistent Toowoomba mare drawn in barrier five with Eddie Wilkinson booked for the ride.

Hidden Dragon filly Saraji meanwhile has been in flying form this time in winning first-up at Eagle Farm before their last start third to Easy Running in the listed Mick Dittman Plate (1000m).

Other notable chances include Les Kelly’s local Johannesburg four-year-old Alltherightmoves who has won six of her eights tarts to date and who handles the wet, and the Kris Lees-trained Sydney raider Next The Universe.

Last year’s Silk Stocking Stakes winner Beethog is also back in 2012 to defend their title.

Drawn in gate six with Paul Hammersley engaged the Shovhog mare has been disappointing of late, nothing like last year when she won the Silk Stocking on the back of a Junamo Stakes third.
