This Saturday the first of the early Queensland Winter Racing Carnival meetings will take place at the Gold Coast with one of the two Group features on the card being the Gold Coast Guineas 2012.
Bringing the day to a close as Gold Coast Race 9 at 4:30pm the $125,000 Group 3 Roger Hawke Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) has drawn a capacity field this year with 16 starters plus five emergencies lying in waiting.
Set to wear the number one saddlecloth on Saturday is the Desleigh Forster-trained Easy Running who has drawn ideally with barrier three.
The Easy Rocking gelding ran a devastatingly close second to Punch On in the Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas here back in January and resumed on April 21 with a tight win over Didntcostalot in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1000m) at Eagle Farm.
Regular rider Damien Browne retains the ride for Saturday, Easy Running with good form over the distance having run second in the Listed Gold Edition Plate when they last raced over the 1200-metres.
Gold Edition Plate winner Biggles is also engaged for the Gold Coast Guineas on Saturday drawn in barrier 14 as they have their first run since finishing fifth in the Magic Millions Guineas.
Magic Millions Guineas winner Punch On will also race first-up in the Gold Coast Guineas.
Peter Balzen’s talented Tiger Hill filly, who also won the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) during the summer, has suffered an early blow for her race return drawing barrier 17.
Meanwhile the top rated of the Gold Coast Guineas hopes this year is the Kris Lees-trained Uate who will jump from gate five with Larry Cassidy in the saddle.
The Ad Valorem colt will be third-up for the season after two runs with mixed form.
Their first-up effort to finish a short half-head away second to Title in the Listed Maurcie McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill was a cracker.
They were found out on a Slow (6) track next time out however when running a distant 10th to Pampelonne in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) on April 22.
With the Gold Coast track currently rated a Slow (7) and more rain on the agenda for the ‘sunshine’ state there is a strong chance Lees will scratch Uate from the race.
Their other Saturday option is the $150,000 Listed Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) in New South Wales which is looking more likely with Hawkesbury a Dead (5) with sunny skies.
There are a number of other interstate raiders in the field including the Peter Snowden-trained Lonhro gelding Mental who races for the first time since Emirates Stakes Day, Gerald Ryan’s Exceed And Excel colt Extraceed who hasn’t been seen since their Rosehill win in July 2011, and the David Payne-trained Redoute’s Choice filly Florentina also resuming after her dead last finish in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) in Sydney last October.
Other notable hopefuls include Toowoomba visitor Double Impact who won back-to-back races in Brisbane during January and February including on a Heavy (10) at Doomben, and the Kelly Doughty-trained local Morning Captain.
Morning Captain is almost certain to start at the top of the Gold Coast Guineas betting markets as they have won their past four starts in great style including the Listed National Jockey Celebration Queensland Day Handicap (1350m) on a Slow (6) Doomben track on April 14.
On Saturday Morning Captain has drawn wide with barrier 15 but will come into 13 with all the emergencies out, top hoop Chris Munce maintaining his association with the smart Danbird gelding.
