Terror Ready to Reign in South Australian Derby 2012

Despite a disappointing effort last time out WA raider Reign Of Terror is being tipped as the improver and one to watch in the 2012 South Australian Derby at Morphettville on Saturday by their Ascot-based trainer Neville Parnham.

More Than Ready gelding Reign Of Terror has won just one of their 10 career starts to date, the youngster’s best effort since that win at Belmot Park last September being their good second behind Lethal Jones in the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) in March.

Yet to race outside of Perth they were last seen crossing five and a half lengths away 11th to Rohan in the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) at Ascot on April 14.

“He didn’t have much hope and it wasn’t a fair indication of where he could have run,” Parnham said of Rein Of Terror’s WATC Derby performance.

“Barrier one was probably too good a draw as he’s a big horse.

“I actually thought he would drop out quite badly but he did his best work late and hit the line well.”

Although they are unraced interstate and their last start left something to be desired, Parnham is confident Reign Of Terror can bounce back and be competitive in the $500,000 Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) this weekend.

A capacity field of 16 starters plus four emergencies was accepted for the South Australian Derby this year.

Early favourites in the markets include Leon Corstens-trained Melbourne youngster Zabeelionaire, Anthony Cummings’ Australian Derby fourth placed Strike The Stars, and the in-form Tony McEvoy-trained local Pelicano.

Reign Of Terror has drawn barrier 12 of 20, coming into gate 10 if the emergencies come out, and will be ridden by regular jockey Steven Parnham.

They won’t be the sole Perth visitor in the race either with Lou Luciani’s Melvista Stakes’ winner Lethal Jones, coming off a WATC Derby fifth, also accepted and drawn in gate two.
