South Australian Derby Field 2012 Released

The 2012 South Australian Derby final field for Saturday’s Morphettville clash has been announced with a capacity 16 starters plus four emergencies accepted.

Anthony Cummings

Last year's winning trainer Anthony Cummings will start Strike The Stars in the 2012 SA Derby

The Anthony Cummings-trained Strike The Stars heads this year’s field for the $500,000 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) which is due to run as race seven at 3:35pm (local time).

Drawn in gate three the Savabeel gelding will be out to hand their trainer successive wins in the race following the success of Shadows In The Sun 12 months ago.

Runner-up to Mosheen in the Australian Guineas back in March, Strike The Stars was last seen finishing a credible fourth to Ethiopia in the Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick.

Dwayne Dunn has the ride for the SA Derby on Saturday, the sixth jockey in as many starts to jump in their saddle.

Early SA Derby odds are led by the Leon Corstens-trained Zabeelionaire who has drawn the rails with barrier one, Damien Oliver to ride.

The Zabeel colt ran a good fourth in the Victoria Derby over this distance at Flemington last Melbourne Cup Carnival and was last seen putting two and a half lengths on their rivals over 2000m at Caulfield on April 21.

The other top pick in the SA Derby betting markets and field is currently Pelicano.

Tony McEvoy’s local Court Of Jewels three-year-old has a super record of five wins from seven starts and comes off a big two and a half length victory at the track over 2400-metres.

Along with Zabeelionaire and Pelican the other last-start winners in the South Australian Derby this year are Heaven’s Riches and Tohunga.

Robbie Laing’s Danerich colt Heaven’s Riches, drawn in gate 10 for Saturday, bounced back from a poor effort at Caulfield two back to win the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) at Morphettville last Saturday where they also jumped from barrier 10.

Chairman’s Stakes runner-up Alcohol, third placegetter Cornell and fourth placed Haroldhaut have also all been accepted for the SA Derby drawn in barriers five, eight and nine respectively.

Tohunga meanwhile is the first emergency for the SA Derby field on Saturday, Gai Waterhouse’s promising Zabeel gelding coming off two good wins.

If they get into the race Tommy Berry will ride from the nice barrier four draw, Waterhouse opting not to accept for her other SA Derby nominee Fat Al.

Other notable chances worth a look at in the markets once released include the Michael Kent-trained stakes winner Backbone, and Phillip Stokes’ Schweppes Stakes minor placegetter Essence.
