South Australian Derby 2012 Nominations

This Saturday the action of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival continues at Morphettville with the running of the 2012 South Australian Derby, nominations for the three-year-olds’ classic now out.

Anthony Cummings

Last year's winning trainer Anthony Cummings has four 2012 SA Derby nominees

Won 12 months ago by the Anthony Cummings-trained Shadows In The Sun, this year’s edition of the $500,000 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) has attracted 49 nominees.

Seeking back-to-back wins in the feature, Cummings has nominated for four from his stables.

Heading Cummings’ contingent is his consistent Savabeel gelding Strike The Stars.

Runner-up to the mighty Mosheen in the Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington back in early March, Strike The Stars was last seen finishing a game fourth to surprise winner Ethiopia in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 14.

Well rested and ready to strike they look in a good position to return in the SA Derby and run a strong 2500-metres against a quality field on the weekend.

Along with Strike The Stars the other top-rated hopefuls among the SA Derby early entries are Michael Moroney’s 2011 Victoria Derby third placegetter Sabrage out to improve on their last in the Australian Derby, and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fat Al.

Progressive Al Maher gelding Fat Al has continued to rise through the ranks over their five wins from seven starts career to date.

Undefeated this time in they come off successive Group 3 wins at Randwick firstly in the Carbine Club Stakes and then in the Frank Packer Plate over the 2000-metres last Saturday.

Kyenton-based trainer Leon Corstens meanwhile has two horses likely to feature in the SA Derby final field with his Zabeel colt Zabeelionaire, last seen winning over 2000-metres at Caulfield, and Zabeel filly Rahveel who ran a credible 11th in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at the track last Saturday.

Other highly promising youngsters high enough up the South Australian Derby ballot order to make the final field should connections accept include WATC Derby runner-up Flashy Fella, and last Saturday’s Australasian Oaks third placegetter Essence form the local stables of Phillip Stokes.

Also among the SA Derby nominations are the top four horses from last Saturday’s $115,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) with the Robbie Laing-trained winner Heaven’s Riches, Richard Jolly’s gallant runner-up Alcohol, the Anthony Freedman-trained third placegetter Cornell and fourth placed Haroldhaut.

Stay tuned to for all the SA Derby 2012 field and betting updates, acceptances due for release shortly.
