Robbie Laing’s Cranbourne improver Heaven’s Riches is looking to continue their good form after an upset Morphettville win last weekend, the Danrich colt set to back up in the South Australian Derby 2012 this Saturday.
Having defeated a field full of other SA Derby hopes in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) as a $151 roughie, Heaven’s Riches boosted their career record to two wins from 12 starts bouncing back from a disappointing 13th to Red Typhoon at Caulfield over 1700-metres the start before.
Proving their potential as a stayer Laing has accepted for Heaven’s Riches to return to Morphettville and step up in distance for a shot at the $500,000 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m).
“He sticks really well, gets back and he charges home,” Laing said of Heaven’s Riches, who you won’t find at a triple figure price this weekend.
They are one of a capacity field, 16 starters plus four spares, and have drawn barrier 10.
Coming into eight with the first three emergencies out, Heaven’s Riches will again be ridden by their Chairman’s Stakes winning jockey Michael Walker who retails the ride.
The three horses that finished second, third and fourth behind Heaven’s Riches in the SA Chairman’s Stakes will all be back on Saturday looking to turn the tables in the Derby.
Runner-up Alcohol, who was beaten less than half a length, jumps from barrier five.
The Anthony Freedman-trained third placed Cornell has gate eight.
For their last three runs Elusive Quality gelding Cornell was ridden by Vlad Duric but Kerrin McEvoy takes over riding duties for the Derby.
Prior to their Chairman’s Stakes third the young gun won back-to-back races including the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) at Morphettville on April 14.
Chairman’s fourth placeetter Haroldhaut meanwhile has drawn barrier nine for this weekend.
The big name SA Derby hopefuls this year are Leon Corsten’s up and coming Melbourne raider Zabeelionaire on the rails and the Anthony Cummings-trained Strike The Stars who races in their fifth Group 1 race on the trot.
