2012 Wagga Wagga Gold Cup Field & Barriers

This Friday an always popular black type will run in New South Wales ahead of the weekend’s racing with the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup 2012.

A full field of 16 starters plus two emergencies has been accepted for this year’s edition of the $140,00 Jam Media 2012 Wagga Wagga Cup (2000m), the event set to run as Wagga Race 7 at 4:15pm on Friday afternoon.

The top-rated and weighted of the contenders is the David Hayes-trained Extra Zero with 58kg.

Winner of the Albury Gold Cup two back Extra Zero comes off a disappointing ninth in the Group 3 HKJC Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on April 7 and has drawn wide with barrier 15 for Friday.

The only other two horses weighted above the 54.5kg minimum in the race this year are then Flemington visitor Lucky Eighty Eight (57kg) and former New Zealander Roi D’Jeu (55kg) who hasn’t raced since their sixth in the Hobart Cup back in February.

Last year’s Wagga Gold Cup winner Voice Commander came off a win in the Queanbeyan Cup.

While this year’s Queanbeyan Cup victor isn’t backing up at Wagga on Friday, the race has attracted two last-start winners with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Rain Drum and Gwenda Markwell’s Agent Bauer.

Drawn in barrier 10, into eight with emergencies out, with Tommy Berry to ride is the ultra-consistent Rain Drum.

The Fastnet Rock four-year-old is only lightly raced with four starts, four of which they have won and the other four they have finished top three in.

Most recently the progressive gelding was seen putting an easy three and a half lengths on their rivals over 1900-metres at Canterbury on April 13, and they are sure to be one of the top fancies in the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup odds once released.

Five-year-old Jeune gelding Agent Bauer meanwhile lines up for their 26th start on Friday having won the Murrumbidgee Cup (1800m) at Wagga last start on April 15.

Wagga Gold Cup runner-up from 2011 World Wide is back looking to go one better, but their recent form leaves a lot to be desired with the Bede Murray-trained galloper having run 11th and 10th respectively in their two most recent outings in Sydney.

Other notable hopefuls include the Chris Waller-trained Group 2 winner Vintedge, Ross Stitt’s up-and-coming stayer Southern Shimmer and the John O’Shea-trained Legsman looking to bounce back after their first-up 10th in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1600m) at Randwick on April 14.
