Gold Coast Guineas Nominations for Saturday, May 5

Top local three year olds Morning Captain and Punch On are set to clash in the Group 3 $125,000 Roger Hawke Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday, May 5.

The Kelly Doughty trained Morning Captain is racing in outstanding form with wins from his last two starts with top jockey Chris Munce aboard.

Munce steered the Danbird gelding to a half length win over Hidden Jewel at Eagle Farm on March 31 in the 1200m Webuyanycar.com.au QTIS three year old Handicap and then repeated the effort with a superb ride to take out the Listed National Jockey Celebration Queensland Day Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on April 14.

Morning Captain has a fifty per cent win rate with four wins from eight starts and will have a fitness advantage over the Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m) winner Punch On who hasn’t started since the Gold Coast win on January 14, beating the Desleigh Forster trainer Easy Running.

Trainer Peter Balzen was able to lift Punch On to the top level last campaign and as well as the Magic Millions win took out the Group 3 $150,000 Channel Seven Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) at Doomben on December 31.

The Tiger Hill three year old has amassed over $800,000 in prizemoney, courtesy of the Magic Millions win on the tricky Gold Coast track.

Easy Running will also line up in the Guineas on Saturday and proved he has come back from a short break in first class order with a narrow but impressive win in the Listed Greenslopes Private Hospital Mick Dittman Plate (1000m) at Eagle Farm on April 21.

The Easy Rocking gelding showed he is ready for a tough 1200m when he finished hard to win over 1000m last start and has also shown his liking for the Gold Coast track with a win and a close second in the Magic Millions Guineas.

The Gold Coast is also represented with the Noel Doyle trainer Biggles and Jam Fancy, trained by Helen Page, who looked like he has some potential with a two length win over In A Storm in the  1200m Web Ninja QTIS three year old Handicap at the Gold Coast on April 14.

John Thompson has nominated two for Patinack Farm, Boys On Tour and Pear Tart while trainer Robert Heathcote has nominated Eagle Farm winner Volkhere and rival Barry Baldwin has entered the speedy Saraji and Jayden And You.
