Sydney Cup Day 2012 Tips & Betting Selections

The Royal Randwick Autumn Racing Carnival comes to a close today with a crack eight race line up, including an impressive four Group 1 showdowns, and here the team at Races.com.au have all the best 2012 Sydney Cup Day betting tips and selections.

Manighar

Manighar is the Races.com.au tip to win the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Stakes today

Racing at Randwick is due to get underway today at 12:25pm with the running of the $100,000 Listed James HB Carr Stakes (1400m) for three-year-old fillies.

The first of the quartet of Group 1 clashes however runs as Race 3 at 1:40pm with Pierro out for the two-year-old triple crown in the $400,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper – Inglis Sires Produce Stakes winning colt odds-on at bookmaker.com.au to do so.

The next of the elite levels is then the $400,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at 2:55pm with boom filly Atlantic Jewel looking to keep her flawless career record intact with a win over a small but classy field under weight-for-age conditions.

The day’s marquee event is scheduled as Race 6 at 3:35pm with the $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m).

Chris Waller is preparing to saddle up three from his stables as he attempts successive wins in the classic, his French import Permit the favourite of the field due to their purple patch of form that includes a last start win in the Chairman’s Quality over many of these same rivals.

While the Sydney Cup is officially the headline event Race 7 at 4:15pm is really the one the punters are after with the best $500,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) field seen in many, many years.

Touted as a Cox Plate worthy line up last Saturday’s Doncaster Mile champion More Joyous is preparing to take on star imports Manighar – out for his fourth straight Group 1, and 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain.

Add last year’s Cox Plate runner-up Jimmy Choux and third placed Rekindled Interest into the mix and this really is an event not to miss.

With so much happening at Randwick today punters are going mad to get their bets down.

But don’t rush into your selections!

Our expert team of tipsters have done the Randwick form, gone over the fields and studied the stats coming up with the below Sydney Cup Day tips to have you backing a winner.

Race 1 – 12:25pm Sharp James HB Carr Stakes (1400m)

  • 1st – #2 Hallowell Belle ($2.90)
  • 2nd – #5 Detours ($10)
  • 3rd – #7 Angel Of Mercy ($7)

Favourite Hallowell Belle is hard to go past, Gai Waterhouse’s smart Starcraft filly coming off brilliant autumn form including a Group 1 third in the TJ Smith Stakes – watch the replay, she should have won.

Detours adds value, ignore their last start eighth it was a tight finish and they will benefit getting back up to the 1400m.

Race 2 – 1:04pm Johnnie Walker Frank Packer Plate (2000m)

  • 1st – #4 Fat Al ($2.15)
  • 2nd – #3 Rekindled Alliance ($5.50)
  • 3rd – #1 Isopach ($9)

The opening two belong to Waterhouse-trained favourites for us. Fat Al comes off two impressive wins and look right for the distance based on a 5.5 length victory at Canterbury over 1900m last November.

Race 3 – 1:40pm Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m)

  • 1st – #1 Pierro ($1.35)
  • 2nd – #8 Flying Snitzel ($12)
  • 3rd – #3 Limes ($10)

Yep, Waterhouse and Nash Rawiller are in for another big day in the winners’ stall! There isn’t really any evidence saying Pierro won’t be undefeated come this afternoon and be the first since Waterhouse’s Dance Hero (2004) to take out the juvenile’s grand slam.

Race 4 – 2:16pm Ascend Sales Emancipation Stakes (1600m)

  • 1st – #3 Fibrillation ($7.50)
  • 2nd – #1 Miss Keepsake ($4.40)
  • 3rd – #5 Crafty Irna ($9)

They keep knocking Tim Martin’s mare but she keeps winning, sure there is a bit more depth here but we are sticking with her.

Race 5 – 2:55pm Ticketek All Aged Stakes (1400m)

  • 1st – #7 Atlantic Jewel ($1.14)
  • 2nd – #3 Rain Affair ($5.50)
  • 3rd – #6 Ofcourseican ($26)

She has proved herself to be Australia’s best three-year-old filly for mine, yes move over Mosheen, and while this is certainly a test going up against the boys in weight-for-age Atlantic Jewel can and should handle it.

Race 6 – 3:35pm Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m)

  • 1st – #2 Drunken Sailor ($6.50)
  • 2nd – #8 Permit ($3.80)
  • 3rd – #3 Niwot ($3.70)

Permit was the deserved favourite, until market mover Niwot’s big plunge, with their form and weight but we are tipping an upset with Drunken Sailor out to atone for their devastatingly close Adelaide Cup second two back over this distance.

Race 7 – 4:15pm Tabcorp Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m)

  • 1st – #2 Manighar ($3.80)
  • 2nd – #7 More Joyous ($2.80)
  • 3rd – #1 Americain ($4.20)

More Joyous is the favourite here but Manighar’s form, three Group 1 wins on the trot, cannot be ignored.

Race 8 – 4:50pm Carolyn Griffin Hall Mark Stakes (1200m)

  • 1st – #4 Pinwheel ($4)
  • 2nd – #8 Nobby Snip ($3.30)
  • 3rd – #12 Dee’N’Gee ($16)

Money is starting to come in now for Peter Snowden’s Lonhro six-year-old Pinwheel and we are on it. They are second-up after a good fourth in the Sebring Stakes on Golden Slipper Day and while it is an unusual prep this distance fresh is going to suit.

Nobby Snip was a crack second in The Galaxy last Saturday, really hard to sack the favourite with their fitness and blistering form, but just think they may have been up a little while.
