Outlandish Lad Wins DC McKay Stakes 2012 – Morphettville Race 8 Results

‘Black Caviar Day’ at Morphettville came to a close this afternoon with good old grey Outlandish Lad winning the 2012 DC McKay Stakes over Peter Moody’s Melbourne mare Kulgrinda.

Following the high of super mare Black Caviar racing away with win number 20 from 20 in the Robert Sangster Stakes, the Adelaide racing action finished up with the $115,000 Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m).

Dennis O’Leary’s six-year-old Fantastic Light gelding Outlandish Lad was last seen running a good third in the Listed Matrice Stakes (1300m) at Morphettville Parks back on March 24, and having been kept ticking over until today came back with their 10th career win from 36 starts.

They are now a dual stakes winner having saluted tow back in a Listed feature at Moonee Valley, Outlandish Lad ridden today by Damian Browne.

In the lead-up race to the $350,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m), run at Morphettville on May 5 and the next target for Black Caviar, the DC McKay Stakes favourite We’re Gonna Rock never came into the mix today.

Black Caviar’s stablemate Kulgrinda was out to finish a perfect day for Moody and jockey Luke Nolen and got away from the inside gate well to settle in second behind speedy leader Periduki.

Kulgrinda began to close the gap on Periduki coming around the corner looming as the main danger before Outlandish Lad streaked down the outside to run them down.

On the line they had one and a half to spare on Kulgrinda with last start Group 2 Centrebet Classic winner Go The Knuckle, who made up lots of ground after being slow away from the gates, a head away third.

Winning trainer O’Leary was thrilled to have won and was quick to credit the Queensland hoop on his mount’s back.

“A wonderful ride,” he said.

“That was just unbelievable.

“He’s been in the money nearly every time (with me).

“He’s such a character.”

Browne too was pleased with the horse’s efforts.

“He’s had some good runs and he’s a very honest type,” he said.

“He was only doing what he had to today and he got the job done.”

The elite level racing action moves to Queensland for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival starting from next weekend.
