Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
History was Black Caviar’s to write once again at Morphettville today with Peter Moody’s superlative mare, rated the world’s best, continuing her meteoric run to score consecutive career win No. 20 in the 2012 Robert Sangster Stakes.
She’s done it in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and now Adelaide can say racing royalty has run and won at the highest level there with the brilliant Bel Esprit five-year-old predictably – but still beautifully – taking out the $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m).
Black Caviar has never been beaten and really the field she faced today was never going to be the type to get the better of the undisputed queen of the Australian turf.
Going out at prohibitive odds of $1.04, the next shortest in the market being former The Goodwood winner Lone Rock at $18, Black Caviar was never challenged as she took her Group 1 wins into double digits with a perfect 10.
In her first look at an Adelaide track the equine great surpassed the consecutive metro wins record she previously shared with Desert Gold and Gloaming, the champion racing for the first time in 10 weeks when she won her 19th on the trot when successfully defending her title in the Lighting Stakes at Flemington.
As relaxed as ever, one of her most remarkable traits, Black Caviar was the shortest priced horse in a Group 1 race in five decades.
Away beautifully from the barriers she led early before letting Just Sybil and Spurcific do the hard yards and go forward.
At the turn for home the anticipation of the 30,000 strong crowd was building and the cheers started up a long way from the line.
Going up with her customary acceleration Black Caviar hit the lead, Power Princess trying to match her, but the winner was always going to win.
On the line she had four lengths to spare over the Andrew Noblet-trained Sistine Angle and Simon Miller’s Power Princess who finished in a photo for the minors, Lone Rock in fourth.
Moody will now decide whether to go round again at Adelaide with his stable ace in the $350,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on May 7, after which she will prepare for her international foray at England’s Royal Ascot.
“It’s tremendous, great to get that behind us,” Moody said.
“She had a great gallop, happy days.
“She hasn’t done it yet (disappointed us).
“She’s in great shape.
“It’s just fabulous to see the people here today enjoy her.
“Luke’s (Nolen) got great faith in her ability and so have I and we haven’t had too much concern.
“It’s unbelievable how she copes with it most of your sprinters are wound up exciting types while she’s just so relaxed.
“She knows she’s something different.”
Different doesn’t even begin to describe the mare that had them turn up and turn out in droves today, a very happy Nolen saying it was onwards and upwards to the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in England.
“There was a lot of people hear to see her today and she didn’t let anyone down,” Nolen said.
“Unbelievable, just unbelievable.
“(Royal Ascot) is going to play right into her strengths.
“She’s a mare that appreciates the straight tracks.
“Australia really has all the best sprinters right here and she’s queen of the sprints here.
“Ascot holds no fears the only thing is she hasn’t been on a plane yet and it’s a long, long way from home but she’s got a lovely constitution so I’m sure she’ll be fine.”
