Angel Of Mercy Wins 2012 James HB Carr Stakes – QLD Oaks Next

The results are in for the opening Sydney Cup Day race at Royal Randwick today with Gerald Ryan’s promising filly Angel Of Mercy earning herself a trip to Queensland for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with an eye-catching win in the James HB Carr Stakes 2012.

Purchased for $180,000 from the 2010 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales the Hussonet three-year-old could be tested over 2400-metres for the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farmon June 4.

In a beautiful ride from jockey Craig Williams in today’s $100,000 Listed Sharp James HB Carr Stakes (1400m), Angel Of Mercy was settled just off the speed one off the fence as the John O’Shea-trained Bound To Blush pressed forward early to hit the front after getting away well from the gates.

Race favourite, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Hallowell Belle, settled into second position while Detours sat third tracking the top two.

By the turn for home Hallowell Belle was only a neck away from the leader.

Bound To Blush however ran on strongly and held their lead right up until the final few hundred metres.

Just not quite seeing out the 1400-metres Hallowell Belle, who was racing for their third  weekend in a row following third place finishes in the TJ Smith Stakes and Gosford Guineas, found herself outsprinted while Angel Of Mercy moved up on the outside.

Hallowell Belle just couldn’t lift but held on to finish third while runner-up Bound To Blush couldn’t match the powerful late burst of Angel Of Mercy who got up to win.

It was a gun ride from Williams, who patiently had her sitting just off them waiting for the split to come and the filly exploded when she needed to as they found the room they needed to move up on the outside and win without too much effort.

Commentators and experts said she looked super in the yard leading up to the race and she performed accordingly.

There could be some debate over whether the Queensland Oaks is the definite target for the James HB Carr Stakes winner with Ryan keen but Williams saying she perhaps wasn’t quite ready.

“Getting back to 1400 metres on a good track was the key,” Ryan said.

“I can’t wait to get this filly to the mile.

“She’s screaming out for it and her pedigree says it.

“She’s going good and we’ve been taking her time.

“I’ve always thought she’d get to a mile and a quarter.

“She’s entered in the (Queensland) Oaks.

“We’ll give her one go as a three-year-old and if it turned out she couldn’t stay you’d freshen her up for the Winter Stakes.”

The $500,000 Group 1 Winter Stakes is run over the Eagle Farm 1400-metres on June 25, and if Williams’ is right this could prove the better Brisbane target.

“She had a great acceleration late in the race,” Williams said of Angle Of Mercy today.

“I hope he (Ryan) waits for three months at least (for the 2400m)

“She’s a lovely filly and it’ll be interesting to see what (distance) she does get out to.

“But I’ll leave that up to them (the connections).”

The next on the Randwick race line-up today is the $125,000 Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at 1:04pm and there is still time to get behind your favourite at
