2012 Sydney Cup Day Best Bets – Randwick 28/04/2012

Earlier today the crew at Races.com.au published our insider 2012 Sydney Cup Day Tips for all eight races on the Royal Randwick card, and below we take a closer look at some of our favourite selections with our best bets of the day.

Permit is the Races.com.au team 'Lay of the Day' on Sydney Cup Day 2012

Lay Of The Day

Race 6 – Sydney Cup – #8 Permit (blink text[$3.80])

Permit dominated the early Sydney Cup betting markets but late money on Niwot has seen them lose top spot in the odds. While we like their form and weight, their Chairman’s Quality win last time out left a little to be deserved for mine and getting up to the two miles they could be found out by some of the same.

Roughie of the Day

Race 6 – Sydney Cup – #2 Drunken Sailor ($6.50)

So if not the favourite than who in the Sydney Cup? While $6.50 isn’t exactly rough it is a good price for when you’re backing it and that’s what we’re doing with Drunken Sailor today. They won over 2600m in the Ropy Higgins at Flemington three back before getting gunned down with a big weight (59.5kg) by 54kg lightweight Rialya in the Adelaide Cup over the two miles. Did well to come so close behind crack imports Manighar and Americain in The BMW over 2400m last start and getting back up in distance is going to be in for a big one.

Better Than Bank Interest

Race 5 – All Aged Stakes – #7 Atlantic Jewel ($1.14)

She’s at Black Caviar like odds for a reason, Atlantic Jewel is the best of her kind getting around as proven with her brilliant first-up win in the Sapphire Stakes. She goes up in class here for her first Group 1 assignment since the Thousand Guineas last October, and yes she takes on the boys at weight-for-age, but she is a special filly. $1.14 certainly is short but take it as her biggest danger Rain Affair ($5.50) won’t like the firming track and looks ready to go out not take on a superstar.

In The Big One

Race 7 – Queen Elizabeth Stakes – #2 Manighar ($3.80)

More Joyous most certainly is a superstar with seven Group 1 wins to her name, but did she peak in the Doncaster last week? Manighar really should be favourite her for mine, and their current price is well worth snapping up. Moody is not known for running his horses when they don’t need to, example Black Caviar, and he wouldn’t be taking this gallant grey into their fourth Group 1 on the trot if he didn’t think he could win the way he has in the Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes and The BMW. Three week break also works in their favour and while they go back in distance they can do it.
