2012 Emancipation Stakes Results – Skyerush Beats Fibrillation

Guy Walter’s honest mare Skyerush won the fourth on Sydney Cup Day at Royal Randwick this afternoon, the now six-year-old atoning for her second in the feature last year with a well-earned win in the Emancipation Stakes 2012.

Skyerush wins the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes 2012

A daughter of American-bred stallion Super Jet Skyerush has been one of Walter’s most consistent mares, today’s success in the $175,000 Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) her eighth win from a solid 33 start career to date.

Coming off a second over the 1400m at the track from last Saturday Skyerush relished dropping back from 59.5kg then to 55.5kg today and showed her will to win pushing through to take the cake in a finish that featured a number of livewire chances.

Having shown form to win at this level throughout the season Skyerush was given a good ride from a level-headed Blake Shinn.

The field jumped as one away from the gates with the eventual winning Emancipation Stakes Quinella of Skyerush and Tim Martin’s Aspiration Quality – Epona Stakes double winner Fibrillation the best into stride.

After Fill The Page led early the speed eased midway but they picked it up again as they came thundering home, the patiently-ridden making their move 450 metres form home.

One hundred out form the finish they were racing four or five across but Skyerush burst through to beat home Fibrillation by a long neck.

A short head further back it was a photo finish for third between last year’s third placegetter Shannara who had raced wide throughout and the fellow Peter Snowden-trained Divorces who had moved up from the back of the field.

The minor placing was eventually awarded to Divorces who finished one better than her fourth in this 12 months ago.

“It’s great to bring it home with a horse I’ve had a lot of luck on,” Shinn said after the win on Skyerush.

“Great to win this race because it’s been mapped out for her for a long time out.

“She’s a very classy horse, she got in well with the weights today.

“A fantastic result.”

Walter agreed and was pleased with the performance of both the horse and hoop.

“She’s such a good little mare and an honest little mare,” he said.

“She’s raced well now for two or three seasons.

“I thought it was a beautiful ride because he (Shinn) didn’t intend to be that far back.

“(She’s) an underrated mare.

“She just wanted to win and that’s been the mark of her career.”

Next-up on Sydney Cup Day boom filly Atlantic Jewel will look to maintain her undefeated record when she takes on the boys under weight-fore-age conditions in the $400,000 Group 1 All aged Stakes (1400m) at 2:55pm.
