2012 Champagne Stakes Odds Update

The first of four exciting Group 1 features running at Royal Randwick today is the Champagne Stakes 2012 where Gai Waterhouse’s ace colt Pierro will look to complete the two-year-olds’ grand slam, the latest odds and betting update for which are detailed below.

Pierro is sure to firm in the next few hours in the 2012 Champagne Stakes odds

Running as Race 3 at 1:40pm, the $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) field features nine two-year-olds in total but really there is only one youngster in this race the punters are after and that’s Pierro.

Undefeated in their five start career to date the son of Lonhro has well rewarded connections that snapped him up at the 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales for $230,000 already having amassed over $2.7 million in prize money.

They are on track for the juvenile Triple Crown today having already won both the Golden Slipper and the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes at their two most recent runs, and the bookies are taking few chances.

Pierro has remained steady in the Champagne Stakes odds at $1.35, and while the money has been constant there hasn’t been any huge bets to bring their price in…yet.

Really surprised that they are still at this price because there is nothing that will beat him today even over the mile.

“He’s just been too good for them,” jockey Nash Rawiller said.

“He has just thrived the whole preparation and I don’t think he’s gone backwards at all from what I’ve seen of him since the Sires.

“The 1600 shouldn’t be a problem.”

Horses before Pierro to complete the autumn two-year-olds grand slam are Baguette, Luskin Star, Tierce, Burst and most recently the Waterhouse-trained Dance Hero in 2004.

Pierro’s got the form and class and he’s going to be the next.

While Pierro hasn’t firmed in the price on their main ‘dangers’ in the Champagne Stakes betting markets have eased out showing there really isn’t money on anything else.

Second pick according to the bookies is the fellow Waterhouse-trained Raceway who is out to $8, while the Peter Snowden-trained Limes out from $8.50 to $10 makes a juicy place bet having run a good third in the Sires Produce.
