TJ Smith Plate 2012 Nominations

Some of the most talented two-year-olds in the country will be on show in Brisbane this winter in the 2012 TJ Smith Plate which will take place at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 9.

Nominations for the $500,000 juvenile event have been released with 109 horses entered to contest the Group 1 feature.

One local hope included in nominations is Better Than Ready who impressed when winning by more than a length on debut last Saturday.

The More Than Ready colt opened with bookmakers at above $20.00 but by race close was an outright favourite following a betting plunge.

Trained by Kelly Schweida, the highly promisng horse showed the mail was right and despite a slow start produced an outstanding turn of speed at the back end of the race to canter away for an easy victory.

One nominated juvenile who already has a decent result to his name is Gerald Ryan-trained colt Dances On Stars who won the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes at Randwick on April 14.

A son of Snitzel, Dances On Stars showed potential in his two previous starts before capitalising on a solid build up with a strong finish to beat a quality field of juveniles in his first attempt at Group level racing.

Guy Walter-trained colt Toydini is another nominated horse with fresh success to his name after winning Wednesday’s Anzac Day Handicap at Randwick-Kensington.

Leading Brisbane trainer Robert Heathcote has three horses nominated with Big Decision, Heza Jetsetter and Mobster and Heathcote is particularly excited about Heza Jetsetter who ran fourth to Better Than Ready last weekend.

“I know all the talk has been around Kelly Schweida’s Better Than Ready after he landed that big plunge,” Heathcote said.

“But I was delighted with the run from Heza Jetsetter and I’ve decided to back up with him on Saturday.”

The talented colt gets his chance to impress this weekend when running from the inside barrier in the second race at Eagle Farm.

Other horses included in nominations include John Thompson-trained pair Strength and Trophies who both featured in the Sydney Autumn Carnival and David Payne-trained colt Honorius who scored mid-field finishes in two Group level races in Sydney recently.
