Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Mark Kavanagh’s in-form five-year-old We’re Gonna Rock is the well supported favourite to win the closing race at Morphettville on Saturday, but can they hold off some quality rivals to salute for the punters in the 2012 DC McKay Stakes?
There are 13 sprinters left in contention for the $115,000 Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m), running as Morphettville Race 8 at 4:30pm (SA time), following the early scratching of #1 Eagle Falls.
Drawn in barrier 10 with Chad Lever to ride on 57kg, Fastnet Rock gelding We’re Gonna Rock has opened top of the DC McKay Stakes odds at a quote of $3.25.
They certainly have the right form coming off two good wins this time in.
First-up they destroyed their competition at Morphettville Parks with a big six length victory over 1000m, their first run since undergoing a gelding operation, on March 10.
Backing up well a fortnight ago they beat many of their DC McKay Stakes rivals when taking out the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m), Lever riding them on 60kg and 58.5kg respectively for their two recent wins.
RN Irwin Stakes runner-up First Command follows We’re Gonna Rock in the latest DC McKay Stakes betting markets at a quote of $6.50.
Also installed as a $6.50 chance is the Peter Moody-trained Kulgrinda.
Set to get the inside run from barrier one some of the attention on Kulgrinda surely comes from her stablemate relationship with the day’s headline attraction Black Caviar, Australia’s turf darling vying for her 20th consecutive career triumph in the 2012 Robert Sangster Stakes.
The final single-figure chance for the DC McKay Stakes win is then Catapulted, another Kavanagh galloper coming via a RN Irwin Stakes third and the early market mover into $7.50.
So does the Races.com.au team’s DC McKay Stakes tip come from one of the favourites?
2012 DC McKay Stakes Trifecta Tip
- #13 Go The Knuckle ($12) from #3 First Command and #6 We’re Gonna Rock
We are tipping an upset DC McKay Stakes tip with Go The Knuckle rated special to win at a juicy price of $12.
With an impressive 83% Win/Place rate, Mark Minervini’s lightly raced but improving Elvstroem gelding is the value bet of the day.
A local last seen winning the Group 2 Centrebet Classic (1200m) at the track over classy type Satin Shoes, Go The Knuckle gets a gun run form barrier two and well weighted on 54kg – they carried 57.5kg to victory last start.
Distance is going to suit Anthony Freedman’s Commands six-year-old First Command who has the right form around the best and a good 67% W&P rate.
Sacking the favourite for the win but can’t take them out of our trifecta all together.
Others to Look At
- Oakbank Stakes winner Basil Da Man ($21) threatens as a genuine Each Way chance at juicy odds, David Jolly-trianed improver with awesome strike rate and juicy price
- Defending champ Streetcar Magic has four wins from six attempts at the track and distance, and come off a good RN Irwin fourth but they need to improve and probably can enough to place top four
- Wouldn’t rule out Stirling Grove either, Richard Jolly’s Mossman four-year-old hasn’t raced since February and their record fresh is very good. Forget Oakleigh Plate 12th, it was a blanket finish, back at Morphettville will be better
