Anthony Freedman’s progressive three-year-old Cornell has opened odds-on favourite to win the SA Chairman’s Stakes 2012 at Morphettville in Adelaide on Saturday, the Elusive Quality gelding out for their third turf triumph on the trot.
Running in Adelaide for the second time in the $115,000 Group 3 SA Chairman’s Stakes (2000m), Cornell has come up with barrier eight in the full 16-starter plus one emergency final field.
With former Caulfield Cup winning jockey Vlad Duric, in ace form riding 15 winners since arriving back in Australia two months ago following a successful few years in Singapore, Cornell was last seen running away to win the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) by an impressive two and a half lengths.
That was the youngster’s first look at Morphettville, Duric riding them then and for their first-up win at Sandown last month, and the bookies think they have improvement in them.
The latest SA Chairman’s Stakes odds at our preferred sportsbook bookmaker.com.au are taking no chances with Cornell and have them at a short $1.80.
Just one of their rivals are rated any kind of chance of an upset with Port Adelaide Guineas runner-up Meshmaker paying $7.50.
Mark Kavanagh’s Flemington-based Testa Rossa gelding goes to the 2000-metres for the first time and has barrier 16 to overcome.
Other gallopers under $20 in the markets are then:
- #13 Quick Retort ($10) – Up and coming Elvstroem filly from the Cranbourne stables of Stephen Theodore, will be a little outclassed and makes a big jump from 1400m to 2000m. Bred for it but not ready for it.
- #6 Banner ($15) – Stand out to us as a genuine threat at juicy odds, ran third in the Port Adelaide Guineas last time out and should improve getting up in distance, especially if there’s rain around. Wet track this is the one to back.
- #5 Niconoise ($16) – David Hayes-trained Redoute’s Choice colt has been off the better ones in Sydney this season, return to Morpehttville where they won first-up back in February, distance is a query. Right track wrong distance?
So is the Races.com.au team sticking with the favourites for our SA Chairman’s Stakes tips? Or do we have a longer priced roughie for the value punt of the day.
- #1 Cornell ($1.80) from #2 Meshmaker, #6 Banner and # 8 Rock Musician
Win place rate of 70% says Cornell is the one to beat, they are short but don’t face a lot.
Meshmaker likes the track with three wins and a second form seven attempts, while Banner will like this distance.
Roughie that adds value at $21 is Rock Musician, Robbie Laing’s Hussonet colt leaps up in class here from a Cranbourne maiden but to us is worth a Place bet after their last-start second over 2080m.
