2012 Queensland Oaks Nominations Released

The nominations for the seven Group 1 majors of the upcoming Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival have now been released by Racing Queensland including those for the three-year-old fillies’ classic, the Queensland Oaks 2012.

Scarlett Lady

Last year's Queensland Oaks winner Scarlett Lady

Running at Brisbane’s famous Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday June 2, this year’s edition of the $400,000 Group 1 Treasury Casino Queensland Oaks (2400m) attracted 87 nominations, down 36 on last year.

Twelve months ago the Queensland Oaks trifecta was dominated by Kiwi raiders with Scarlett Lady and Shez Sinsational finishing second and third respectively, Lee Freedman’s Victorian visitor Becerra sandwiched in between in second place.

This year it is shaping up as a more local affair with the majority of Queensland Oaks nominees coming from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, however there is one very dangerous looking New Zealand filly in the mix.

The John Sargent-trained Shinko King filly Kasumi debuted down under at career start number eight last time out to finish a good fourth in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) and will get her chance to improve on that when she races in the $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville this Saturday.

A number of other major Queensland Oaks hopes will face off in the Adelaide classic including:

  • The Anthony Freedman-trained Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes winner Crucial
  • Their stablemate Crystalised
  • Zabeel filly Rahveel
  • The Michael Kent-trained MV Fillies Classic third placed Our Miss Jones
  • Robert Smerdon’s Red Typhoon

One surprise omission from the Queensland Oaks early entries was the Guy Walter-trained Streama who won an exclusive invitation into the race after winning the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick last Saturday.

Other more notable 2012 Queensland Oaks nominees include:

  • Aliyana (Bart Cummings)
  • Crimson Lady (Michael Moroney)
  • Euryale (Peter Snowden)
  • Hidden Jewel (Matthew Dunn)

Murwillumbah-based filly Hidden Jewel won the Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday, her third win at the track.

The fillies that finished two-three behind Hidden Jewel in the Princess Stakes, the Toby Edmonds-trained Rocksan and David Kelly’s Tycoon’s Heart, have also both been nominated for the Queensland Oaks.

One of the key lead-up races to the Queensland Oaks, which Scarlett Lady won on her way to Group 1 success, is the $175,000 Group 3 The Roses (2020m) running at Doomben on May 19.

First acceptances for the race will be taken on Wednesday May 23 followed by the release of the 2012 Queensland Oaks final field on May 30.
