Stradbroke Handicap 2012 Nominations Released

Nominations have been released for the 2012 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) which takes place as the richest race in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Beaded

Stradbroke Handicap 2011 runner-up Beaded has been nominated to contest this year's Brisbane feature event

Plenty of quality has been included in the 105 horse list of nominations for the $1 million event that will take place at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 9.

Peter Snowden-trained mare Beaded has been nominated and gets her chance to avenge last year’s runner-up effort when she finished a head behind Sincero.

A daughter of Lohnro, the six-year-old had a successful winter campaign in the Queensland capital last year, winning the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 before consecutive second-place finishes in the Stradbroke Handicap and the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara.

Two local hopes included in nominations are Robert Heathcote-trained gelding Buffering and Tony Gollan’s Temple Of Boom who recorded a first ever Group 1 win in Saturday’s Galaxy at Randwick.

Buffering is yet to taste Group 1 success but had he run in a different era, he may well well have several elite level victories to his name.

The talented four-year-old has finished behind Black Caviar and Hay List on several occasions including this year’s Lightning Stakes where he was runner-up to Black Caviar and the Newmarket Handicap where he was half a head behind Hay List.

Temple Of Boom trainer Tony Gollan is still weighing up his winter options for the five-year-old after earlier this week receiving an invitation to the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

The overseas trip would rule out at the Stradbroke with Gollan saying the weather could play a big role in deciding his next move.

“The weather here will be a big factor. If the tracks here start to dry up quickly we might not continue with his preparation,” he said.

Another Robert Heathcote gelding included in nominations is Woorim who surprised many when winning the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield in late February.

Two-time winner Black Piranaha has been nominated and the eight-year-old made his first public hit-out since October in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm this week.

Despite being eight years old, Black Piranha showed he had plenty of racing left in him last spring with promising fourth-place finishes three times at Group level.

In-form gelding Nobby Snip suffered his first loss of 2012 when running second in the Galaxy to Temple Of Boom and that performance along with this three previous consecutive victories suggest he is ready for Group 1 level racing.

He is one of three Gai Waterhouse horses included in nominations with talented three-year-olds Landing and Under The Sun the other two.

Landing has signalled plenty of potential in his young career to date, going unbeaten with four dominant performances

His smallest win was by 1.8 lengths which came in last Saturday’s Listed South Pacific Classic at Randwick.

Others included in nominations for the Brisbane feature event include two-time Group 1 winner Albert The Fat, Myer Classic winner Hurtle Myrtle and TJ Smith Stakes winner Master Of Design.
