Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Chris Waller’s in form five-year-old Permit is the clear cut favourite to win the 2012 Sydney Cup at Royal Randwick on Saturday, the former French galloper topping the markets for the classic two mile showdown.
A final field of 16 stayers are accepted to contest the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) this year, the event running as Randwick Race 6 at 3:35pm.
In the latest Sydney Cup odds at our preferred online bookie bookmaker.com.au, Dansili gelding Permit is the pronounced $3.40 favourite.
Drawn in barrier three they come off back-to-back wins in Sydney.
Two back they beat home fellow Sydney Cup rivals Precedence and Older Than Time in the Listed NE Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill before their smart win over last year’s Sydney Cup runner-up Older Than Time again, this time in the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) at Randwick on April 14.
Having had just seven stars for Waller since his debut for the stable last November, Permit has enjoyed a fast rise through the ranks and his trainer believes it could all culminate with thoroughbred major on Saturday.
“Everything has gone Permit’s way and fallen into place,” Waller said.
“He’s stepped up in class and performed each time and the luck has gone his way.
“Or maybe he’s the sort of horse who makes his own luck.”
For their last start win in the Chairman’s Permit was ridden by Corey Brown who is serving a suspension, the prized Sydney Cup mount going to Kerrin McEvoy.
There are just three other hopefuls under double figures in the Sydney Cup betting markets with:
- #3 Niwot ($4.60) – Hawkes-trained seven-year-old has been in good form this season with two fourth place finishes behind Manighar in the Ranvet Stakes and The BMW at Rosehill have form over the distance with a credible eighth in last year’s Melbourne Cup and are well weighted on 55.5kg
- #2 Drunken Sailor ($6.50) – Michael Moroney’s class import in barrier six with Damien Oliver riding on 57kg, have looked threatening all season with a black type victory in the Roy Higgins Quality at Flemington, a close second over the two miles in the Adelaide Cup and an eye-catching The BMW third, ready to strike
- #9 Older Than Time ($9) – Second in last year’s Sydney Cup and looking to go one better on Saturday, from the right stable with Gai Waterhouse in sensational form, third to Permit in the NE Manion two back before being beaten by Saturday’s favourite again in the Chairman’s when second, can place again with a good ride
Other top fancies at slightly longer odds including Bart Cumming’s Zabeel six-year-old Precedence ($11), veteran of the field and 58kg topweight Efficient ($15), and Bendigo galloper Anudjawun ($17) stepping up in class but ready for the distance and the challenge.
