Gunsynd Classic 2012 Final Field & Barrier Draw

This Saturday Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse will compete for attention with Sydney Cup Day in Sydney and ‘Black Caviar Day’ in Adelaide with a double shot of Group racing action to run including the 2012 Gunsynd Classic.

Set to run as Race 7 at 4:05pm the $125,000 Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) has drawn a full field of 18 starters plus one emergency, unlike the day’s other feature with Buffering heading a diminutive five-horse field for the $175,000 Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m).

There are two last start winners engaged in the Gunsynd Classic this year with the Robert Heathcote-trained Vacallo in barrier nine and Tony Gollan’s lightly-raced Rocket Boots with barrier 18 to overcome.

Thorn Park gelding Vacallo has won their last two on the trot starting with a big win on a Heavy (8) Gold Coast track followed by a solid effort over 1350-metres at Doomben, where they jumped from barrier 12 of 13, to win on April 11.

Fastnet Rock gelding Rocket Boots meanwhile comes off a massive five and a half length success at their home track at Toowoomba over the 1625-metres and looks well positioned to step up in class as they have just their fifth career start.

Brisbane’s premier trainer Heathcote is also represented in the field by Trump who has come up trumps with barrier three, Ric McMahon to ride the Written Tycoon gelding coming off a good second in the Listed National Jockey Celebration QLD Day (1350m) at the track a fortnight ago.

Other gallopers coming off some nice recent form include Peter Moody’s Melbourne visitor Brambles (barrier 11) coming off a fourth to Fat Al in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes over the Randwick mile,Kiwi raider Quintessential (barrier eight) who ran a good third in the Group 1 NZ Oaks (2400m) on March 17, and the Howard Wilson-trained Reset filly Vortex (barrier 13).

Another notable hopeful is Jack’s Back in barrier seven with Jim Byrne to ride the Kevin Kemp-trained three-year-old.

The Greenwood Lake gelding ran sixth last start in a stakes race at the track over 1350-meters and Kemp believes stepping up in distance will suit them on Saturday, the Toowoomba trainer also considering a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 9.

“He’s been crying out for ground and should be very strong at the finish again,” Kemp said.

“I’ve struggled to get the same rider on him at his past couple of runs and it’s a plus Jim Byrne is riding him again.

“He’s never been further than 1350 metres but he’s been finishing off his races like he wants ground.”
