Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Sydney Cup Day is shaping up as a beauty at Randwick on Saturday, the first of the six Group races on the card being the 2012 Frank Packer Plate for three-year-olds.
Due to jump at 1:04pm as Royal Randwick Race 2, the $125,000 Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) has this year drawn a final field of 10 acceptors.
Sure to be favourite in the Frank Packer Plate odds once released at bookmaker.com.au is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fat Al.
Coming off back-to-back wins this time in the Al Maher gelding was last seen putting an easy two lengths on Now You Know to win the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 14.
They go up to the 2000-metres for the first time on Saturday but have good winning form up to 1900m having taken out an Inglis 3YO Handicap at Canterbury last November by an impressive five and a half lengths.
On Saturday they jump from barrier two with Carbine Club Stakes winning jockey Nash Rawiller retaining the ride.
Waterhouse will also be represented in the Frank Packer Plate field this year by Redoute’s Choice gelding Just The Tonic in barrier seven, the youngster out to improve on their disappointing last start eighth at Kensington.
After Fat Al three of other big dangers in the Frank Packer Plate for 2012 have all come up with wider draws with Peter Snowden’s classy Commands colt Ambidexter, the Paul Messara-trained Rekindled Alliance and John Thompson’s Magic Albert gelding Isopach drawn in barriers eight to 10 respectively.
Ambidexter has been racing at a much higher level this autumn and racing competitively as they come off two close fourth place finishes, beaten under a length each time, firstly behind Mosheen in the Group 1 Randwick Guienas (1600m) and then Laser Hawk in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) last month.
Redoute’s Choice colt Rekindled Alliance also comes off an elite level run, the Phar Lap Stakes – Tulloch Stakes runner-up last seen finishing three lengths away fifth to upset winner Ethiopia in the Australian Derby (2400m) a fortnight ago at Randwick.
Peter Moody’s More Than Ready colt Huegill meanwhile will jump from the inside alley with Dwayne Dunn aboard as they too look to improve on a Group 1 run when 14th to Metal Bender in the Geroge Ryder Stakes (1500m) on Golden Slipper Day.
Also drawn nicely is the John O’Shea-trained Iggi Pop who will benefit from having the in-form Kiwi 20-year-old James McDonald in the saddle.
