Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Bart Cummings’ smart Fastnet Rock filly Empress Rock has opened top of the markets to win the 2012 Schweppes Australasian Oaks at Morphettville this Saturday despite having been beaten by a number of her weekend rivals last start.
The second best race on the card following Black Caviar running in the 2012 Robert Sangster Stakes, the $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) field is at capacity with 16 confirmed starters plus four emergencies.
Top fancy of the three-year-old fillies is Empress Rock in barrier nine, into eight with emergencies out, who pays $4.40 in the Australasian Oaks betting markets to win through our preferred sportsbook bookmaker.com.au.
Last start she was seen running a brave fifth when beaten one and a half lengths by fellow Schweppes Oaks rival Crucial in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) at Morphetville on April 14 which was her first look at the track.
Dropping back from the 58.5kg she carried there to 56kg under Saturday’s set weights conditions Empress Rock is tipped to improve and return to the form that saw her win back-to-back Group 2’s in Melbourne before the Schweppervescence.
In a relatively wide open Australasian Stakes betting market this year four other chances are at single figure odds with:
- #2 Crucial ($6.50) – Anthony Freedman’s Mornington visitor won the Schweppervescence Stakes here last start from barrier 16 of 16, has seen the track now which is in her favour, gets a better gate with 10 (into 9 without emergencies), jockey Vlad Duric stays on and she can handle the weight. If she handles the distance she’s at a good price.
- #9 Red Typhoon ($6.50) – Robert Smerdon-trained filly goes to Adelaide for the first time, has been thereabouts this season in the lower grades in Melbourne, ran a good fourth to Zabeelionaire last Saturday over the 2000-metres, has a wide gate but time to overcome and Glen Boss aboard is a big plus. Class rise but she’s classy.
- #10 Our Miss Jones ($7) – Luke Nolen to ride Michael Kent’s filly from barrier two, comes off a third to Empress Rock in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) from March 23, a while between runs, hasn’t seen further than a mile and could get caught up from the inside draw. Sack Me.
- #3 Rahveel ($7.50) – Zabeel filly bred for this distance, her second in the Schweppervescence last time out was an eye catcher and James Winks rides again, out wider but shouldn’t matter over this. Definite Each Way chance.
Other longer priced fillies not without their chances for an Australasian Schweppes Oaks upset on Saturday include last start Adrian Knox Stakes third placed Secret Liaison ($11), New Zealand raider Kasumi ($14) coming off a fourth in the Port Adelaide Guineas over 1800m here, and early market mover Crimson Lady ($14) from the Flemington stables of Michael Moroney who was third in the Schweppervesence.
