2012 Doomben 10,000 Nominations

Nominations for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival majors were released today including those for one of the most popular and lucrative sunshine state showdowns, the Doomben 10,000 2012.

Beaded has been nominated to defend her title in the 2012 Doomben 10,000

Running at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday May 26 the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) has drawn a total of 55 early entries at nomination stage, down 17 on last year.

While Black Caviar is not among the Doomben 10,000 nominations for 2012, the superlative sprinter having dominated the nominees before withdrawing before acceptances 12 months ago, the list of hopefuls still boasts plenty of class and plenty of depth.

Reigning Doomben 10,000 winner Beaded is one of the most notable nominees, Peter Snowden’s ultra-consistent Lonhro mare having finally broken her Group 1 duck after many close calls in this race 12 months ago.

Beaded would go on to run a brave second to Sincero in Queensland’s richest race, the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) last winter, and second again in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at the end of June.

Snowden has also nominated for six-year-old Pinwheel, and another Lonhro mare Parables coming off a brave fourth to boom filly Atlantic Jewel in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) in Sydney who could join their ace stablemate in the Doomben 10,000 field.

Sapphire Stakes runner-up Mid Summer Music from the Moody stables and third placed Ladys Angel are also both nominated for this year’s Doomben 10,000.

Beaded came via a second place finish in the Group 1 Sportingbet Classic – Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide before her Doomben 10,000 last year.

The 2012 Robert Sangster Stakes runs at Morphettville this Saturday and is the platform for Black Caviar to win her 20th consecutive career start.

The only Robert Sangster hopeful that is also nominated for the Doomben 10,000 during the winter this time round is four-year-old Testa Rossa mare Sistine Angel.

Dual Stradbroke Handicap champion and last year’s Doomben 10,000 minor placegetter Black Piranha is also in the mix this year.

One of the best local hopes for Queensland to win the Doomben 10,000 is then last weekend’s Group 1 The Galaxy winner Temple Of Boom for Toowoomba trainer Tony Gollan.

There are a plethora of other Group 1 champions among the Doomben 10,000 entries including the Rob Heathcote-trained Woorim who gave their trainer his maiden Group 1 victory in the Oakleigh Plate back in February at Caulfield.

Heathcote has also entered his multiple Group 1 performer Buffering who has run top three in his last four races all at Group 1 level, Brisbane Handicap winning mare Fillydelphia and five-year-old Solzhenitsyn.

Other notable Doomben 10,000 nominations include:

  • Albert The Fat (Chris Waller) – Reigning Emirates Stakes winner last seen running three lengths away seventh to More Joyous in the Doncaster Mile
  • Hurtle Myrtle (Matthew Smith) – Myer Classic champ from last spring ran a good fourth in the Queen Of The Turf before their disappointing Docnaster 16th
  • Rain Affair (Joe Pride) – Winner of 11 of their 14 starts, Commands four-year-old finishing a close second to Master Of Design in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes last time out
  • Scenic Blast (Dan Morton) – Internationally tried veteran seven-year-old hasn’t raced since their fifth to Balck Caviar in the Patinack Farm Classic last November

The first round of Doomben 10,000 acceptances will be taken on Wednesday May 16.

The Doomben 10,000 final field will then be released on May 23 and published right here at Races.com.au.
