Eight-year-old gelding Black Piranha has made his first steps towards the 2012 Stradbroke Handicap after making a public appearance in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm this morning.
Back under the guidance of trainer Con Karakatsanis after a brief stint with Anthony Freedman, the veteran was ridden quietly to finish fifth in the 800 metre hit-out.
Black Pirahna won the Brisbane feature Stradbroke Handicap in 2009 and 2010 and Karakatsanis said that was again the goal for the winner of more than $2.6 million in prize money.
“I’m hoping to get him to Brisbane but I’m taking it step by step to keep his legs sound because he’s no spring chicken,” Karakatsanis said.
Despite being eight years old, the son of Clang might still have some success left in him after a reasonable spring campaign that saw him record fourth-place finishes in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes and Chelmsford Stakes as well as the Group 1 George Main Stakes.
Black Piranha moved to Anthony Freedman’s stable after the George main Stakes effort after being bought by well-known owner Sean Buckley.
He had just one race under the guidance of Freedman, a 12th-place finish in the Salinger Stakes before Buckley decided to return the sprinter to Con Karakatsanis’ Rosehill based stables.
Nominations for the Stradbroke Handicap close this Thursday at 11am with the $1 million event set to take place at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 9.
The 1400m race is the richest event in the Brisbane Winter Carnival that also features the Doomben 10,000 and the BTC Cup.
Preparations for the Brisbane carnival begin this weekend when Group level racing returns to the sunshine state.
Newmarket Handicap runner-up Buffering returns to defend his title in the Group 2 Victory Stakes while a decent field of three-year-olds will battle it out over 1600 metres in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic.
