Official 16-Horse Sydney Cup Field 2012

The official 16-horse 2012 Sydney Cup field for this Saturday’s marquee event at Royal Randwick has been released with last year’s winning trainer Chris Waller back with three live wire chances including the defending champ Stand To Gain.

Stand To Gain

Stand To Gain will defend their title in the 2012 Sydney Cup before becoming a jumps horse

Hawk Wing six-year-old Stand To Gain is back in Waller’s care after one failed run under Robert Smerdon who gave them some jumps training, the galloper out to win their first race in 12 months with an upset in Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m).

“He has lost a bit interest in racing,” Waller said of his reigning Sydney Cup winner.

“He is still sound and in good condition but he just doesn’t seem to want to perform on race day.

“We sent him to Robert’s place to try and break up his routine with some work over jumps and we will see how he goes on Saturday.”

Sure to be roughie in the Sydney Cup markets, Saturday will be Stand To Gain’s swansong race for Waller before permanently relocating to Smerdon’s Caulfield operation.

“He’ll go back to Robert’s to train on as a jumper,” Waller said.

“Robert said he seems to enjoy it and he has sharpened up a bit so we hope it produces an improved run over the 3200 metres in the Sydney Cup.”

Waller’s main chance of scoring successive victories in the classic however likes in Permit, the bookmaker.com.au Sydney Cup betting favourite drawn in barrier three for Saturday.

Five-year-old Dansili gelding Permit, who gets into the field on 53.5kg, has won their past two starts with a close win in the Listed NE Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill before their good victory over Older Than Time in the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality Handicap (2600m) at Randwick on April 14.

Rounding out Waller’s Sydney Cup 2012 trio is then veteran seven-year-old Hawk Island in gate 12.

Hawk Island was the hard luck story of last year’s Sydney Cup when the fell during the run and failed to finish, the Hawk Wing gelding looking to atone on Saturday.

Last year’s Sydney Cup runner-up Older Than Time, and third placegetter Solid Billing have also both been accepted again this year.

Don Eduardo mare Older Than Time in barrier 14 is one of two chances for the raging hot Gai Waterhouse along with Once Were Wild in gate 11.

Following Permit in the Sydney Cup odds are then Drunken Sailor and Niwot.

Michael Moroney’s smart seven-year-old Drunken Sailor has been in good form this autumn winning the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) at Flemington and finishing a close second to Rialya in the Gorup 2 Adelaide Cup over the two miles before their brave third last start to Manighar in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on April 7.

Niwot meanwhile comes off a The BMW fourth, the Hawkes-trianed Galileo seven-year-old having appeared in last year’s Melbourne Cup when a brave eighth in the world’s richest handicap.

Other notable entries include the Peter Moody-trained Hanks who will be ridden by top New Zealand jockey James McDonald, Chariman’s Quality third placed Nextanix, and the Gwenda Markwell-trained Queanbeyan Cup winner Peal Of Bells out for their fifth on the trot.
