Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Nine brave trainers have chosen to test their horses against champion mare Black Caviar in the Group 1 2012 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphetville this Saturday.
The Peter Moody-trained superstar will travel to Adelaide tomorrow after impressing in a final hit-out under the watchful eye of trainer Peter Moody at Caulfield this morning.
It is likely the connections of her nine competitors are in it for the show rather than the prize money, as only a miracle will prevent Black Caviar recording a 20th straight victory and an Australasian record.
Black Caviar equalled the record of Desert Gold (1916) and Gloaming (1921) when she cruised to a 19th consecutive victory in the Coolmore Lightning Stakes in February and she is an almost certainty to go one better with most bookmakers installing her as $1.04 favourite prior to the field being named this morning.
The best sprinter in the world has drawn barrier three with the next best horse in the race, Lone Rock, set to come from two spots outside her in barrier five.
Speaking yesterday, trainer Robert Smerdon wasn’t bold enough to suggest that the mare could end Black Caviar’s reign but was confident she would produce a good showing.
“She’s going well and she has good form at the track and distance so if you take Black Caviar out, you’d have to think she would be a big chance of winning it,” Smerdon said.
The four-year-old won last year’s Group 1 Goodwood Handicap and is coming off a reasonable fourth-place effort in the William Reid Stakes in late March.
Also included in the field is Simon Miller-trained mare Power Princess, in-form six-year-old Just Sybil and Mark Kavanagh mare Valentine Miss.
A sell-out crowd of approximately 30,000 people are expected to flock to Morphetville to see the start on a day that will also feature the Group 1 Australasian Oaks.
Apart from achieving the Australiasian record, Black Caviar will score an amazing tenth Group 1 victory if she does as expected and wins on Saturday.
The market will open shortly for the Black Caviar V The Rest event this Saturday, so be sure to head to bookmaker.com.au to get invovled.
