The big question heading into this weekend’s 2012 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) is will superstar filly Atlantic Jewel run?
Trainer Mark Kavanagh has dual nominated the Fastnet Rock filly for both the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes and the Group 1 All Aged Stakes to be held at Royal Randwick this Saturday.
She will start as a short-priced favourite no matter where she runs but Kavanagh may decide to continue easing her back into racing agains her own sex with another Group 2 run after impressing with a four-length win in the Sapphire Stakes on April 14.
Atlantic Jewel has produced six dominant victories from six career starts and already has people talking about a future match up with wonder mare Black Caviar.
Fifteen other horses have been nominated for the Emancipation Stakes, which has a prize pool of $175,000 and will be run over 1600 metres.
One of the better known horses outside the star filly is Peter Snowden-trained mare Raspberries who has six wins from 17 trips to the track.
A daughter of Lohnro, the four-year-old began 2012 in fine form with a two-and-a-half length victory in the Group 3 PFD Food Services Stakes and then took third in the Sunline Stakes at Moonee Valley.
But she will have to bounce back from her last start where she finished a disappointing eighth in a weak Doncaster Prelude field at Randwick on April 14.
Tim Martin-trained mare Fibrillation may have just four wins from 16 starts but she is coming into the race in career best form.
The four-year-old is chasing a third consecutive victory after following up a surprise first-up victory in the Aspiration Quality with a one-length win in the Group 3 Epona Stakes in late March.
Crafty Irna finished runner-up to Fibrillation in the Epona Stakes and she is another nominated mare in decent form.
It was the Starcraft mare’s second runner-up finish of the year after running behind Red Tracer in the Millie Fox Stakes and she also produced a promising fourth-place effort in the Aspiration Quality.
Also nominated to run in the Emancipation Stakes are Peter Snowden mares Shannara and Divorces as well as Group 1 winner Mirjulisa Lass.
