Buffering Heads 2012 Victory Stakes Nominations

With the winter carnival not too far away, Group level racing returns to Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse this weekend and a quality field have been nominated for the feature Group 2 2012 Victory Stakes (1200m).

Buffering will begin his Brisbane Campaign in the Victory Stakes this weekend

Headling the 10-horse nominations list is 2011 winner Buffering who is coming off a third-place effort behind Foxwedge and Hay List in the William Reid Stakes.

Despite being unable to record victory so far in 2012, the Robert Heathcote-trained gelding has been impressive with the William Reid Stakes third preceded by a tight runner-up finish to Hay List in the prestigious Newmarket Handicap and a third-place finish in the Lightning Stakes to Black Caviar.

While the four-year-old won’t come up against horses of the calibre of Black Caviar or Hay List this weekend, some quality sprinters are set to line up in the $175,000 event.

Included among them is three-time Group 1 winner Scenic Blast who made his return to Australian racing last November after a spell overseas.

The seven-year-old will be having his first start in 2012 after being last seen running fifth in the Patinack Farm Classic, a race in which Buffering finished runner-up to Black Caviar.

If Sue Grills-trained gelding Border Rebel is included in the final field on Thursday, the seven-year-old will have to make a quick turnaround after finishing last in the Galaxy at Randwick on Saturday.

Still on a high after seeing Temple Of Boom give him a first ever Group 1 victory in the Galaxy, Queensland trainer Tony Gollan has nominated his half brother Spirit Of Boom for Saturday’s sprint.

The four-year-old is yet to record victory at Group level but signalled his potential earlier this year with back-to-back victories in at the Gold Coast and was impressive last start when running second at Doomben on April 14.

Promising four-year-old Tiger Tees faces a step up in class in his first crack at Group level racing this weekend but the Joseph Pride-trained horse has the form to suggest he is ready.

From nine career starts, the gelding has recorded six victories and finished second on the other three occasions.

The Victory Stakes is one of two feature races in the sushine state this Saturday, with the other the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic.
