Black Caviar Day – 2012 Chairman’s Stakes Nominations

Saturday is unofficially becoming known as ‘Black Caviar Day’ at Adelaide’s Morphettville Racecourse and one of the key support races at the meeting will be the Chairman’s Stakes 2012.

Mark Kavanagh

Mark Kavanagh will seek back-to-back wins in the 2012 Chairman's Stakes at Morphettville this Saturday

While Black Caviar will shoot for her 20th consecutive career triumph in the Robert Sangster Stakes, one of two elite level features on the card, there are plenty of other exciting events for the race fans and punters including the $115,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m).

A traditional lead-up race to the $350,000 Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) on May 5, this years’ edition of the three-year-olds’ clash has drawn 23 nominations.

The highest rated Chairman’s Stakes entry this year is the Anthony Freedman-trained Cornell.

The in-form Elusive Quality gelding has won their opening two starts this season including a big two and a half length victory in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) at the track on April 14.

Port Adelaide Guineas runner-up Meshmaker and third placed Banner, from the Mornington stables of Matt Laurie, have also both been nominated to backup in the Chairman’s Stakes.

Fellow Mornington horseman Freedman meanwhile has also nominated for his improving Zabeel filly  Crystalised.

Last year’s Chairman’s Stakes winner was the Mark Kavanagh-trained Kittens who went on to run a brave fourth to Shadows In The Sun in the SA Derby.

This year Kavanagh will seek successive wins having nominated for Starcraft gelding Hammer Time.

Kavanagh also co-trains the aforementioned Meshmaker with his son Sam.

Other top rated youngsters in the Chairman’s Stakes mix this year include Phillip Stoke’s progressive local Al Samer filly Elldami looking to improve on her ninth in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) at the track on April 14, stakes winning Hold That Tiger filly Temper Tantrum, and the Michael Kent-trained Backbone,

Mossman gelding Backbone comes off a smart last-start victory when carrying 59kg from barrier 11 (of 12) to beat home Rock Robster by one and three quarter lengths in the Listed Galilee Final (2400m) at Mornington on April 8.

Stay tuned to for all the latest Adelaide racing news and updates for Saturday’s features including the Chairman’s Stakes final field and barriers released on Thursday.
