Backbone Tops VRC St Leger Odds 2012

Michael Kent’s progressive Cranbourne galloper Backbone has opened top of the markets for Wednesday’s 2012 VRC St Leger, one of the two black types running at Flemington this Anzac Day.

Of the full 16-starter field for the $150,000 Listed VRC St Leger (2800m), due to jump at 3:55pm as Flemington Race 6, Mossman gelding Backbone is the best fancied in the markets.

Coming off a good one and three quarter length victory over Rock Robster in the Listed Galilee Final (2400m) at Mornington on April 8, Backbone has opened as the $3.80 VRC St Leger betting favourite.

They are the equal 57.5kg topweight with $51 outsider Methuselah but should relish dropping back from the 59kg they carried to victory last start.

There are five other three-year-olds currently at single-figures in the VRC St Leger odds with:

  • #4 Vatuvei ($6) – Peter Moody-trained Reset gelding coming off a close third to the favourite Backbone in the Galilee Final, they were a fast finisher that day and should appreciate the 2800-meters
  • #3 Starkiato ($6.50) – Glen Boss rides from the outside gate, plenty of time to get across, out to give trainer John Sadler his third win in the event and based on their good recent form should handle the class rise here
  • #5 Duel Lover ($7.50) – Nigel Blackiston-trained Duelled gelding has been hit and miss, but when they fire they really fire, Blackiston won the race 12 months ago with Right Of Refusal
  • #11 Rive Gauche ($8.50) – Jim Conlan-trained Zabeel grey should get a gun run from barrier three with Dwyane Dunn riding, come off a Galilee fourth and are bred to improve over more ground
  • #10 Practiced ($9) – Robert Hickmott’s Encosta De Lago three-year-old ran sixth in the Galilee from the outside barrier, get in here in a better gate (7) with Craig Williams in the saddle
