2012 Schweppes Australasian Oaks Final Field & Barriers

This Saturday Adelaide’s Morphettville Racecourse will come to life with ‘Black Caviar Day’ to feature two Group 1 classics including the Schweppes Australasian Oaks 2012 which has drawn a capacity field.

Empress Rock

Empress Rock will start one of the top fancies in the 2012 Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville this Saturday

With a sellout crowd ready to turn up and watch the Peter Moody-trained Black Caviar attempt her incredible 20th consecutive career success in the $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m), the bookmaker.com.au punters will earlier be treated to another elite level with the $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) to run as Morphettville Race 5 at 2:35pm.

Won twelve months ago by Peter Moody’s Lights Of Heaven over AJC Oaks champ Absolutely and subsequent Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed, another quality field of three-year-old fillies are set to do battle this weekend.

A capacity 16 starters plus four emergencies make up the Schweppes Oaks field for Saturday, the top-rated entry being Bart Cummings’ Victorian raider Empress Rock.

Drawn in barrier nine with Steven Arnold to ride Fastnet Rock filly Empress Rock won back-to-back Group 2 features in Melbourne taking out the Kewney Stakes – MV Fillies Classic double before her last start fifth to Crucial in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m).

The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic was the same race that Lights Of Heaven won before her Schweppes Oaks triumph 12 months ago.

Schweppervescence Stakes winner Crucial has also been accepted to back up in the Oaks on Saturday.

Anthony Freedman’s improving Nadeem filly overcame gate 16 of 16 to break her Group duck last start and from barrier 10 on Saturday looks a smart chance of becoming a Group 1 winner.

Other Schweppes Oaks hopes coming via a run in the Schweppervescence Stakes at the track on April 14 include runner-up Rahveel who will be ridden from barrier 15 with James Winks aboard on Saturday, and third palcegetter Crimson Lady who has come up with the extreme outside gate.

Also in the Schweppes Oaks picture this year are the likes of the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Secret Liaison coming off a third in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) in Sydney, the Robert Smerdon-trained Red Typhoon to be ridden by Glen Boss, and Michael Kent’s MV Fillies Classic third placegetter Our Miss Jones in gate two with Black caviar’s jockey Luke Nolen engaged.
