Pierro Shoots for 2YO Triple Crown – 2012 Champagne Stakes

Saturday’s Sydney Cup Day at Royal Randwick is shaping up as another big one for Gai Waterhouse whose Golden Slipper winner Pierro will look to become just the sixth juvenile in history to secure the Sydney autumn’s two-year-old Triple Crown.

Golden Slipper winner Pierro is out for the 2YO Triple Crown with a 2012 Champagne Stakes win on Saturday

Waterhouse has firmly put herself back on top of the Group 1 circuit in Sydney winning an impressive five Group 1’s in the past five weeks, and things don’t look like slowing down just yet.

Two of those triumphs have been thanks to her excellent Lonhro colt Pierro, the $2.7 million earner undefeated in their five start career to date.

Pierro broke their Group 1 maiden status at career start number four with a smart victory in the world’s richest two-year-olds race, the $3.5 million Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on April 7.

They then silenced the doubters with a big one and three quarter length victory seven days later at Randwick when defeating odds-on favourite All Too Hard in the Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).

They look to complete the two-year-olds’ grand slam, the first to do so since the fellow Waterhouse-trained Dance Hero in 2004, with a win in the $400,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) on Saturday, Pierro stepping up to the mile for the first time.

“He is just the superior colt and has thrived since his last win,” Waterhouse said.

“He will have no trouble with the mile in the Champagne.

“He is such a good two-year-old, such a good horse.

“I couldn’t be any happier with him.”

Among Pierro’s expected small number of Champagne Stakes rivals on Saturday will be the Gerald Ryan-trained Flying Snitzel to be ridden by Glyn Schofield, and Clarry Conners Fernhill Stakes winner Dear Demi.

Waterhouse’s other eye will be on her mighty mare More Joyous on Saturday, last weekend’s gallant Doncaster Mile winner out for her remarkable eighth Group 1 triumph in the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
