Official Champagne Stakes 2012 Nominations

This Saturday four Group 1 features will take centre stage at Randwick for Sydney Cup Day one of which is the two-year-olds’ 2012 Champagne Stakes where Gai Waterhouse’s undefeated colt Pierro will shoot for his sixth career victory.

Pierro

Pierro will take some beating in the 2012 Champagne Stakes on Saturday

There were a total of 10 juveniles nominated for the $400,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), nominations extended until 11am on Tuesday.

Last year’s Champagne Stakes winner was Helmet, and on Saturday Pierro will attempt to win the same Inglis Sires Produce Stakes – Champagne Stakes double as the Peter Snowden’s champion colt.

Making a Champagne Stakes win by Pierro even more notable, however, will be the fact that it will complete the 2YO Triple Crown as the outstanding youngster also saluted in this year’s Golden Slipper.

Five horses before Pierro have completed the Sydney juvenile’s grand slam the most recent being Waterhouse’s Dance Hero in 2004.

There is not much in the way of worthy competitors for Pierro in the 2012 Champagne Stakes, Waterhouse having also nominated for Raceway.

The More Than Ready rig ran fifth in the Golden Slipper before their fourth in the Sires Produce and is likely to make a better three-year-old.

Snowden meanwhile will seek back-to-back wins with his Inglis Sires Produce third placed Commands colt Limes, who also ran a good third behind All Too Hard in the Pago Pago Stakes two back, and Tatra who finished dead last in the Sires Produce last time out.

The other more notable entries are then the Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi coming off a win in the Listed Fernhill Handicap over the Randwick mile last weekend, and Gerald Ryan’s recent Group 3 The Schweppervescence winner Flying Snitzel.
