McDonald Rides 2012 Gosford Guineas Winner Pampelonne

Just one day after his quartet of wins on Doncaster Mile Day at Randwick ace young Kiwi jockey James McDonald capped off a beautiful weekend with the winning ride on Tim Martin’s up-and-comer Pampelonne in the Gosford Guineas 2012 on Sunday.

Sincero

Sincero won the 2011 Gosford Guineas in the lead-up to their Stradbroke Handicap success last year

McDonald dominated the early action on Doncaster Day riding the first three winners on the card, which was followed by their Group 1 win on Tony Gollan’s Toowoomba galloper Temple Of Boom in the $350,000 The Galaxy.

Their winning streak didn’t end there with McDonald backing up at Gosford on Sunday to take out the $250,000 Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) on lightly-raced Rock Of Gibraltar gelding Papelonne.

Going out as a $5 fancy in the Gosford Guineas markets, Pampelonne had one and a quarter lengths to spare over the local Adam Duggan-trained Fox ($21).

Gai Waterhouse’s Group performing filly Hallowell Belle ($2.60) finished off the Gosford Guineas trifecta running a further three quarters of a length away third as the beaten favourite.

It was an eye-catching win as Pampelonne sat just outside the early leader before pulling out a devastating burst of acceleration to run away with the victory, their third in just five starts to date.

“He gave me an exceptional feel and I think he’s going to be a pretty good racehorse,” McDonald, 20, said.

“His turn of foot on the corner was very good and better ground will help him.

“He’ll show an electric turn of foot on top of the ground.”

Rosehill-based Martin will now follow the path tread by reigning Stradbroke Handicap winner Sincero by taking Pampelonne to the Inglis 3YO Guineas (1600m) at Scone next month.

“He’s a very promising horse,” Martin said of Pampelonne.

“It was a big jump in class but he probably should be unbeaten as he’s been unlucky a couple of times.

“I expected him to win today but it was just good to see him do it.”

Sincero, who reared in the gates at Randwick last Saturday before their fourth in the Doncaster Mile, won the 2011 Gosford Guineas first-up before a win at Scone next start.

They went on to run a disappointing 11th in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) in Brisbane following their Guineas double before bouncing back to win the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in an Eagle Farm upset.

This year the 2012 Stradbroke Handicap runs at Eagle Farm on June 9.
