Superlative filly Atlantic Jewel has been dually nominated for Saturday’s Sydney Cup Day at Royal Randwick, the more notable of the two events trainer Mark Kavanagh is considering for her next up being the All Aged Stakes 2012.
Winner of the Thousand Guineas during the spring, Fastnet Rock three-year-old Atlantic Jewel is yet to be defeated in her stunning six start career to date.
She spent over five months on the sidelines after her season was prematurely cut short last year due to a minor leg injury.
Resuming in emphatic style two weeks ago this Saturday Atlantic Jewel showed she was still Australia’s best filly with a blistering four length victory in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m).
This weekend she will vie for another Group win but whether Kavanagh tests her in weight-for-age company in the $400,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) or keeps her against the fillies and mares in the $175,000 Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) is still to be decided.
It is a strong list of 13 All Aged Stakes nominees this year with other Group 1 winners in the mix including Chris Waller’s reigning Emirates Stakes victor Albert The Fat and recent Futurity Stakes winning Kiwi King Mufhasa.
Also a dual Sydney Cup Day nominee is Rekindled Interest, Jim Conlan’s Cox Plate third placegetter coming off a narrow second in the George Ryder also entered for the star-studded $500,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) where last Saturday’s Doncaster Mile champ More Joyous will back up in .
Without Atlantic Jewel the likely All Aged Stakes favourite will be Joe Pride’s consistent Commands four-year-old Rain Affair.
A winner of 11 of their 14 starts to date Rain Affair narrowly missed out on their maiden Group 1 victory last start when finishing a long neck away second to Master Of Design in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
There is a chance Rain Affair will bypass the event, however, if the Randwick course isn’t soft enough.
Pride has also nominated for Queen Of The Turf Stakes runner-up Miss Keepsake and Mossman five-year-old Neeson.
Another notable hopeful that is yet to be confirmed as an acceptor is TJ Smith Stakes conqueror Master Of Design, one of two entries for trainer David Payne along with Centennial Park.
Payne admitted he didn’t know what was on the cards for Master Of Design, the six-year-old even being considered for stud duties.
“I don’t even know if the horse will race again,” Payne said.
“What I do know is that there have been many offers for him from the breeders so it is a case of wait and see what happens.
“He pulled up perfectly (after the TJ Smith Stakes) and has done everything asked of him.
“We are just keeping him ticking over for another week and we’ll hope for the same result in the All Aged Stakes (if he runs).”
