Anzac Day Stakes 2012 Final Field & Preview

This Wednesday punters are treated to a top Anzac Day race program at Flemington, the day’s action headlined by the 2012 Anzac Day Stakes.

A final field of 15 two-year-olds have been accepted to contest this year’s $100,000 Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1410m), the top rated of which is Underestimation.

Suffering an early blow with a wide barrier 14 draw Dean Lawson’s Al Samer colt will also be asked to carry the hefty 59kg topweight of the field.

Despite their good recent form with a big three and a half length win in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, and a last-start second in the Group 3 Marsh Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville, the huge weight and wide draw all but rule Underestimation out for the win.

They give a minimum 2.5kg away to their rivals with the next heaviest weighted of the hopefuls being Anthony Freedman’s Bernardini colt Boban (56.5kg).

Coming off a smart win over 1400-metres at Sandown at the start of the month Boban has drawn ideally with barrier two for Wednesday and will be ridden by Daniel Moor.

Only one other juvenile to have broken their maiden status ahead of the Anzac Day Stakes clash is then the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Thunder Rain (54kg in barrier seven).

Thunder Rain won their debut at Sale on April Fools’ Day but was last seen finishing a disappointing seventh over 1200-metres at Flemington a fortnight later.

Ellerton & Zahra have also accepted for Pillar Of Creation who has the ‘visitor’s draw’ of 15 to overcome, the God’s Own gelding coming off two third place finishes for their opening two career runs.

Also with multiple Anzac Day Stakes acceptances are Peter Moody with debutants Prince Jester on the rails in barrier one with Luke Nolen to rice and Zachord in gate nine; and John Thompson with progressive Casino Prince filly Fiesty Belle in barrier 11 and Casino Bride, another daughter of Casino Prince, drawn nicely in four.

Anzac Day Stakes betting markets are due to open shortly at our preferred online bookmaker –
