Streama Wins Tough 2012 Australian Oaks

Odds-on favourite Streama has won the first Group 1 race of the day at Royal Randwick, producing a remarkable effort at the back end of the race to take out the 2012 Australian Oaks (2400m).

Streama is the 2012 Australian Oaks winner

The Guy Walter-trained filly was backed into $1.40 at prior to the race and she signalled her talent when coming from four lengths behind with 400 metres to go to run down leaders Aliyana Tilde and Thy.

Champion Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman was happy to let the star filly sit behind the leaders and resisted the urge to chase when they started to break away with 900 metres to go.

As they headed into the top of the straight, Bowman let Streama Unleash and she showed a tremendous turn of foot to chase the leaders down and win by a head.

Walter was happy to get away with the victory and said she would now head to the paddock for a much-deserved rest.

“She’s had to make up a fair bit of ground…but she’s got away with it,” he said.

“Really pleased with her, she’s done a great job.

“We’ll give her a nice break now I think.”

The filly’s second Group 1 victory was demonstrative of her quality, leaving plenty of options open for her future this spring including the Myer Classic and the Emirates.

Jockey Bowman was relieved to get the victory, saying it was an awkwardly run race.

“It’s nice going into a race with a horse of that calibre but you’ve still go to do the right thing by them and give them a chance,” he said.

“It wasn’t ideal, I wasn’t exactly where I wanted to be but I just had to deal with it and I kept her relaxed.

“She’s got a good turn of foot and she makes her own luck. She did that again today.”

The win adds to Streama’s already impressive resume which now stands at six wins from 13 starts.

The feature race of today’s Randwick race meeting is the Doncaster Mile which is not too far away so hurry to to back your winner!
