Single Style Upsets Driefontein in 2012 Keith Mackay Quality

New Zealand filly Single Style has produced an excellent final sprint to overtake race favourite Driefontein and win the $100,000 Listed 2012 Keith Mackay Quality at Royal Randwick today.

Single Style is the 2012 Keith Mackay Quality winner at Randwick

Former Magic Millions winner Driefontein overcame her much-publicised barrier problems to jump well but carrying a massive 60.5kg she was unable to hang on at the back end, losing by a head to the Gary Portelli-trained filly.

Portelli was thrilled to beat Driefontein, who was the most highly rated horse in the race and was coming off a sixth-place effort in the Golden Slipper.

“She’s [Driefontein] one of the top fillies, there’s no doubt she’ll line up in the spring and she’ll be the horse to beat wherever she goes,” Portelli said.

“To get that sort of weight on a filly like her, it was a courageous effort by the second horse and an even better effort by mine.”

Portelli confirmed Single Style would now be spelled after recording a third-place effort and two victories since debuting in March.

“She’ll have a well-earned spell. It’s her first preparation, she’s won a black type race now.”

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt was ridden by youngster James McDonald which was the second victory of the day for the New Zealand rider after winning the Fernhill Handicap on Dear Demi in the first race of the day.

McDonald said he was confident heading into the race carrying 5.5 kilograms less than Driefontein and was happy to make the favourite work.

“She wasn’t carrying much weight, 5.5 less than the one inside me, I thought I’d make it work a little bit,” McDonald said.

“We went slow enough for the first half of the race and she toughed it out really well.

“Got there by a head, the smallest of margins.”

Peter Snowden-trained filly Meidung finished strongly and managed to take third ahead of the highly promising Agueda.
