Landing Cruises to 2012 South Pacific Classic Victory

Short-priced favourite Landing has cruised to a dominant victory in the $100,000 Listed 2012 South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse today.

Landing wins the South Pacific Classic on Doncaster Mile Day at Randwick

The More Than Ready gelding looked to be in a class of his own, jumping to an early lead and taking charge for the entire race before skipping away on the final straight to win by nearly two lengths.

It continues an excellent start to the Gai Waterhouse three-year-old’s career who is now unbeaten from four starts, with all the previous victories as dominant as today’s.

Landing went into the race as deserving $1.80 favourite at and Waterhouse was singing his praises after the race.

“What a talented three-year-old. He took control of the race in the early stages,” Waterhouse said.

“He just took control and it was never in doubt he was going to win.

“Really exciting horse.”

Experienced jockey Nash Rawiller wasn’t forced to do too much work, riding the gelding positively and he had enough talent to win comfortably ahead of Sacred Pins and Miss Upstart.

Rawiller has ridden for Waterhouse for five years and said the three-year-old was typical of the horses to come out of her stable.

“He’s been given plenty of time to mature by Gai and we’re starting to really reap the rewards with him now,” he said.

“He took it to whole new level today.

“The sectionals he was running he was doing it on his ear.”

Landing is expected to continue his campaign, with Waterhouse saying there was plenty left in the gelding’s tank.

Sacred Pins received some attention from the punters and was easily the second best horse in the race but he never looked like challenging Landing who showed he has the potential to kick on to bigger races.
