Dear Demi Signals Staying Future with 2012 Fernhill Handicap Win

Clarry Connors-trained filly Dear Demi has justified her favouritism in her first trip at a mile (1600m), taking out the 2012 Fernhill Handicap by half a length ahead of Trophies and Proverb.

Ridden by boom New Zealand jockey James McDonald, the daughter of Dehere was able to settle nicely behind the leaders and McDonald allowed her to sit there until the final furlong.

From there Dear Demi showed a nice turn of speed and was able to overtake Proverb and charge to victory in the final 50 metres, showing plenty of toughness to hold off Trophies who finished strongly.

McDonald was pleased with the talented two-year-old’s fight at the back end of the race and believes the 1600 metre distance is one that suits.

“Full credit to the filly, she fought really hard and she’s come away with a well deserved win,” McDonald said.

“She’s a tough filly and a mile definitely suits her because she just grinds away.”

Connors was pleased Dear Demi stepped up to take victory after finishing second to Flying Snitzel in the Schweppervescence and suggested she has a very bright future as a stayer.

“She’s a pretty good filly…we haven’t had a lot of luck with her. Little things have gone wrong without being serious,” Connors said.

“I think she’s just a lovely a staying filly.

“I can’t wait until next year, she’s going to be a lovely filly at 2000 metres or further.”

The autumn is not over for the exciting two-year-old who gets another chance to impress over a mile in next Saturday’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick.

It will the first Group 1 start for Dear Demi who has had a reasonable start to her career with her record now standing at two wins from seven starts.

The Randwick action is just getting underway with the Group 1 Australian Oaks, Doncaster Mile and Galaxy still to come at the famous Sydney racecourse.
