VRC St Leger Nominations – Anzac Day Races 2012

Next Wednesday Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne is set to come alive for the always popular Anzac Day Races, one of the two black type features headlining the program being the 2012 VRC St Leger.

This year’s edition of the $150,000 Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) has attracted 19 nominations, the three-year-olds staying classic to run alongside the $100,000 Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1410m) for two-year-olds.

Won 12 months ago by Right Of Refusal, Flemington trainer Nigel Blackiston will shoot for back-to-back wins this year with his Duelled gelding Duel Lover.

It is a quality list of VRC St Leger 2012 nominations with two last start winners entered in Mossman gelding Backbone and Barley A Moment three-year-old Baby Boy.

The Michael Kent-trained Backbone has won three of their seven starts to date and was last seen finishing an easy one and three quarter lengths clear of Rock Robster in the Listed Galilee Final (2400m) at Mornington on April 28.

Galilee Final runner-up Rock Robster has also been nominated for the VRC St Leger next week, the David Hayes-trained Fastnet Rock filly having won the Tasmanian Oaks back in February.

Rock Robster is an unlikely acceptor for Wednesday however as she runs up against odds-on favourite Streama in Saturday’s $550,000 Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick for Doncaster Mile Day.

Ron Daniel’s Baby Boy meanwhile comes off a good win over 2050-metres at Morphettville on Thursday, the progressive youngster showing promising signs of making the 2800-metres of the St Leger.

Some other gallopers coming off good form include Hayes’ lightly-raced Encosta De Lago filly Fonssagrives and the Guy Walter-trained King Of The Forest.

Premier Victorian horseman Peter Moody is also set to be represented in the event should he chose to accept for his Galilee Final third placegetter Vatuvei.

Other top trainers with entries include Jim Conlan with Zabeel gelding Rive Gauche coming off a Galilee Final fourth, Robbie Laing with Scelto, John Sadler with up-and-coming Starcraft colt Starkiato and Michael Kent with Toranos.

The Anzac Day Flemington acceptances will be taken early next week, including those revealing the VRC St Leger final field.
