Pink Ribbon Cup 2012 Odds & Betting Guide

While the big racing action this weekend is in Sydney for Doncaster Mile Day at Royal Randwick, Victoria’s Caulfield Racecourse will also host a crack day’s racing headlined by the 2012 Pink Ribbon Cup where a tight market features plenty of livewire chances.

Testa My Patience

Testa My Patience will be the only runner for Mick Price in the 2012 Pink Ribbon Cup on Saturday

Due to run at 3:15pm as Caulfield Race 6 on Saturday the $100,000 Pink Ribbon Cup (1400m), also known as the Anniversary Vase, field remains full with 12 starters – two emergencies awaiting a scratching to gain a start.

One of those two emergencies is the Mick Price-trained Sheila’s Star, the flying mare actually topping the Pink Ribbon Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au.

Sheila’s Star has drawn ideally in barrier four with Glen Boss engaged and is at a deservedly short $3 in the markets.

Coming off three straight wins over the distance, the last two at Caulfield, the smart Snitzel four-year-old has put an accumulative 11.5 lengths on her rivals during those three victories and it’s just a shame she’s not in the starting line-up yet.

Without getting a start, however, punters are warned not to back her with Sheila’s Star to intead race in the $80,000 Listed City Of Adelaide Handicap (1400m) at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.

“We did a ring around the other trainers to get an idea if Sheila’s Star would get a start but they are all running,” Price said.

“So she’ll be running in Adelaide.

“She’s drawn barrier one and she’ll have a good chance there as she would have had she been running here at Caulfield.

“She deserves black type and hopefully she can win in Adelaide with Clare Lindop riding.”

Locally based Price would still be represented in the Pinker Ribbon Cup field in barrier 10 by his Group 2 Crystal Mile winner Testa My Patience.

Having to carry a hefty 59.5kg, Sheila’s Star’s on the 54kg minimum, Testa My Patience pays $11 in the latest odds and Price likes their form for this.

“He’s ready to hit the line and he’s hard fit,” he said.

“A bit of rain would be OK for him, just to take the sectionals out of the race a little bit, especially over 1400, but he gets his chance.

“Fitness wise there’ll be excuses. It’s just a matter of, if it is top of the ground, whether he can run quick enough sectionals, but I think he can.

“I think he’ll hit the line really well, albeit with a big weight and with a bit of a gate there, but he’s ready to fire.”

If the first emergency fails to gain a start it will be Freereturn who likely jumps favourite, the Jason Warren-trained five-year-old currently a $4 chance.

Freereturn won their final three runs last spring and then resumed in the same awesome form with a two and a half length victory over 1200m at Moonee Valley on March 31.

They are yet to win second-up but have run two seconds and a third from three attempts making them a notable danger, and their Win / Place percentage of 86% is certainly nothing to mock.

The other single-figure chances in the Pink Ribbon Cup odds are then:

  • #6 Pago Rock ($4.60) – Early market mover, Peter Moody’s exciting four-year-old has only finished outside of the top three once in their 11 start career so far, they come off a win over the track and distance and look a strong chance of doing it again. Track & Distance Suite – Best Each Way Chance.
  • #5 Under The Eiffel ($5.50) – Tony Vasil-trained Mossman gelding, raced almost exclusively in Group company as a three-year-old last season and is a Group 3 winner at Sandown, was a distant second in the Group 3 Victorian Handicap (1400m) here last start but has improvement in them. They Beat The Gate They Can Win.

Punters after a little more value may like to look at the likes of Dusty Star ($12) looking for a second-up win and last-start Sunline Stakes fourth placed Echuca Cup winner Zubbaya ($14) both with genuine claims, while Elusive King is good value to place in their resuming run.
