Winter King has a chance to record his first victory in more than 18 months when he lines up in the $350,000 Group 1 2012 Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick this weekend.
The five-year-old’s last win came over the Galaxy distance of 1100 metres when he took top honours in the Starlight Stakes at Randwick in August 2010.
Since then, the David Payne-trained horse has placed 10 times from 17 starts and Payne believes this weekend provides an excellent opportunity for him to go one better.
“He looks to have found the right conditions on Saturday,” Payne said.
With rain bucketing down in Sydney for most of this week, the Randwick track is expected to be heavy or at the very best slow, something that should suit Winter King.
In four starts on heavy tracks, the gelding has recorded victory twice and ran second on another two ocassions and he showed promise in his last start when running second in the Sebring Stakes (1100m).
“He’s very well. He ran second the other day in the Sebring and he was badly ridden the time before,” Payne said.
He will again get a chance at 1100 metres this weekend, a distance he is most comfortable, having recorded four of his seven career wins at the length.
To win tomorrow’s feature race will be no easy task though, with plenty of quality sprinters set to line up on a soggy Randwick track.
Highly rated four-year-old Bel Sprinter is the current bookmaker.com.au favourite ($5.00), slightly ahead of in-form gelding Nobby Snip ($6.00) who is chasing a fourth consecutive victory.
Others in the Galaxy field include Sebring Stakes winner Zaratone, 2011 Galaxy runner-up Thankgodyou’rehere, Oakleigh Plate runner-up Elite Falls and talented three-year-old Hot Snitzel.
The Galaxy is one of the feature races on a cracking Randwick card this weekend that also includes the prestigious Doncaster Mile and the Group 1 ATC Oaks.
