2012 South Pacific Classic Odds & Betting Preview

One of the key support races on a crack Doncaster Mile Day program at Royal Randwick on Saturday is the South Pacific Classic 2012, the odds and Races.com.au betting preview for which detailed below.

Nash Rawiller

Nash Rawiller has the mount on 2012 South Pacific Classic favourite Landing on Saturday

Running as Randwick Race 4 at 1:40pm on Saturday the $100,000 Listed McGrath South Pacific Classic (1400m) field is down to 13 hopefuls following the early scratching of #8 Unpretentious.

Unsurprisingly Gai Waterhouse’s undefeated More Than Ready gelding Landing has opened at the top of the South Pacific Classic odds at our preferred online bookie bookmaker.com.au.

Due to jump from barrier 10 with piping hot hoop Nash Rawiller in the saddle Landing pays $2.20 to win their fourth straight career win and keep their perfect record intact.

There’s a lot to like about backing the favourite here too with the progressive galloper coming off a three length win over the distance at Warwick Farm at the start of the month and their advantageous weight drop from 58.5kg to 57kg.

Can they handle the wet? The More Than Ready progeny seem to okay and that’s the test.

The punters are coming like crazy for Landing too meaning their price is sure to firm before jump time on Saturday.

“All the money is for Landing,” Ryan Clark from bookmaker.com.au said.

“He’s one of the best supported on the entire card.”

The only other single-figure chance in the race is the Chris Waller-trained Sacred Pins paying $4.

They come off a somewhat disappointing seventh to Hallowell Belle in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) when outclassed but should do better against this field on Saturday.

Also this one is proven in the wet with a good win on a Heavy (8) at Warwick Farm last October, so conditions to suit.

So who are the other main dangers at good odds?

  • #1 Free Wheeling ($13) – Needs to get off the rail from barrier two with the Heavy going but Snowden’s colt looked good last start over the 1500m when a close fourth in the Phar Lap, didn’t handle the wet two back in the Hobartville but that was more to do with their rivals than the ground. Ignore Two Back Wet Won’t Faze.
  • #11 War Charm ($14) – Goulburn galloper goes up in class but was an eye-catching fifth to Nobby Snip two back on a slow track at stakes level, distance ideal but are they good enough? Only Needs to Improve a Bit to Be A Genuine Threat.
  • #14 Deceiver ($10) – Thought we might have got this one at better odds but the bookies are on it. Stablemate to Wra Charm and comes off a good fourth at Kensington over 1300m was at shorter odds then but gets Craig Williams on Saturday. Awesome Strike Rate – Best Place Chance.
