Quality Field for 2012 Gosford Guineas

A full allotment of 16 horses have been named to contest this Sunday’s $250,000 Listed 2012 Gosford Guineas and the field features plenty of quality.

Hallowell Belle

Hallowell Belle is one of the top horses named to contest Sunday's Gosford Guineas

One of the headline acts is Gai Waterhouse-trained filly Hallowell Belle who has placed three times and recorded victory once from four starts in 2012.

The Starcraft filly won the Darby Munro Stakes at the end of March and backed that up on the weekend with a third-place effort in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes at Sydney’s famous Randwick racecourse.

Regular Waterhouse rider Tommy Berry has ridden Hallowell Belle in her last three starts and he will again be in the saddle when she jumps from barrier 11 on Sunday.

Some pre-race scratchings are to be expected with the likes of in-form horses Nobby Snip and Satin Shoes also named to contest the Group 1 Galaxy at Randwick on Saturday.

Nobby Snip is coming off three straight victories while Satin Shoes ran well to finish runner-up to Rain Affair in the Challenge Stakes on March 31.

Barring a weather-related scratching, one horse who is an almost guaranteed starter is Uate who will be ridden by champion jockey Hugh Bowman from barrier 18.

The Kris Lees-trained colt was impressive first-up when running second to Title in the Maurice McCarten Stakes after a disappointing spring campaign.

Big things were expected of the three-year-old in the spring after he burst on to the scene at the beginning of last year with three straight victories and a runner-up finish to Helmet in the Sires’ produce Stakes.

The $250,000 prize carrot has drawn plenty of notable metropolitan runners to the provincial meet and other horses easily recognisable to the average weekend punter include Aerobatics, African Pulse and Upbeat.

Aerobatics has featured among the places in Sydney Listed events this year while African Pulse is a much-hyped colt that is yet to produce his best as a three-year-old.

Anthony Cummings-trained gelding Upbeat won the Group 2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield earlier this year but will be looking to bounce back from a surprisngly disappointing last-place finish in the Bendigo Guineas on March 17.
