With a wet track looming for Doncaster Day at Royal Randwick this weekend, there are plenty of chances for upsets which should please the punters ahead of the Group 1 2012 Galaxy (1100m).
Current favourite to take out the $350,000 event is highly rated Victorian gelding Bel Sprinter ($5.00), who is coming off a fourth-place effort in the Challenge Stakes on March 31.
A son of Bel Esprit, the four-year-old has received plenty of hype in his young career but remains unproven with all his starts coming on dead or good tracks.
Next back in the betting is the field’s most in-form horse, Nobby Snip ($6.00), who is chasing a fourth consecutive victory and his first at Group level.
The talented Gai Waterhouse three-year-old showed he can run on all surfaces when winning by nearly two lengths on a heavy (9) track in the Fireball Quality before beating Niagara on a slow (6) Rosehill track in the Eskimo Prince a fortnight later.
Leading jockey Jim Cassidy will ride Elite Falls on Saturday and earlier this week said he was confident the More Than Ready filly would thrive in the wet.
“The more rain the better,” Cassidy said.
“If it pours down I would love it.”
One proven wet track performer is Joseph Pride-trained mare Ladys Angel ($15.00) who appreciated a drop back to a sprinter’s distance when running third in the Sapphire Stakes.
From five starts on heavy surfaces, the daughter of Arena has an impressive record of three wins and two runner-up finishes.
She has drawn a wide barrier (13) which should keep her out of trouble if the track is as damp as predicted and will be ridden by experienced jockey Craig Williams.
